Question ID: 297813
I need to know the number of kidney transplant faciities in Europe.
Specifically, I need to know the the number of facilities performing
kidney transplants (not dialysis) in Spain, Germany, Italy, France,
UK, Netherlands Austria, Portugal, and Belgium. If you can not find
one of the countries, just give the ones that you can find. They are
listed in the order that I want to know, meaning that I want to know
about Spain more than I am interested in Austria, but I would like to
know this information for each. It would be most helpful to know this
information for year 2,000 or any year after later.

Additionally, if you can give me some of the information sooner,
rather than all the information, later, that is more desirable.

If you have any questions, just ask and I will be please to let you know.

Thank you very much!

Hi crystal4290, I am afraid France is the country I am stuck on!

Without any of the documentation, here is what I have:

Spain: 40
Germany: 41
Italy: 38
France:
UK: 27
Netherlands: 10
Austria: 6
Portugal: 8
Belgium: 8

France is being a real stinker! I beleive that the transplant laws are
stricter there than other countries. I am still looking. If you are
happy with this, I can post the rest, and continue on with France....

Regards,
crabcakes

Thanks for the help. I really do need the ones for France - so I
would ask that you see what you can do. I know that the liver
transplant facilities for mostly the same countries come to a total of
118. In the US there are 122 liver transplant facilities. The US has
246 kidney transplant facilities. You have a total so far of 160
which makes sense. I am guessing the number is somewhere around 40.
Let me know if you come up with the one for France. And especially
thank you for yourhard work!

Hi crystal4290-ga,

Here is what I have found for you.

Spain:
This site lists each hospital on a separate frame. Rather than enter
them all here, I have tallied each region here (Clicking on each
region will give you a list- I counted each hospital/center that
performed kidney (riņon) transplants) In counting, I counted only once
hospitals that were listed separately for adults and children.
http://www.trasplan.org/Ingles/home2.htm

From the Health Ministry web site (Ministerio de Salud) in Spain, this
site is written in frames: You will need to click on the links in the
left hand column to find numbers, histo-compatibility centers and
more, in Spain.
You didn?t ask for number of transplants in Spain, but I found it interesting!
http://www.msc.es/Diseno/informacionProfesional/profesional_trasplantes_e.htm
According to this Berkeley site, 48 people out of 1 million in Spain
had renal transplants in the year 2000.
http://emlab.berkeley.edu/users/webfac/held/international.pdf

Italy:
According to this site, The Journal of Nephrology, J NEPHROL 2003; 16:
342-349, there are 38 renal transplant centers in Italy. (This can be
found almost to the bottom of the page, in the paragraph above the
last illustration.)
http://www.sin-italia.org/jnonline/Vol16n3/342.html
and
http://www.ifrr.net/id_europa.htm

Austria:
According to *Eurotransplant, there are 6 renal transplant centers in Austria.
http://www.transplant.org/index.php?country=austria&organ=kidney&id=transplantcenter&show_button=%AB+show
According to this Berkeley University site, in the year 2000, 49
people per million had a kidney transplant, in Austria.

Belgium:
According to *Eurotransplant, there are 8 renal transplant centers in Belgium.
http://www.transplant.org/index.php?country=belgium&organ=kidney&id=transplantcenter&show_button=%AB+show
http://emlab.berkeley.edu/users/webfac/held/international.pdf

Germany:
According to *Eurotransplant, there are 41 renal transplant centers in Germany!
http://www.transplant.org/index.php?country=germany&organ=kidney&id=transplantcenter&show_button=%AB+show
According to this Berkeley site, 27 people out of 1 million had renal
transplants in Germany, in 2000.
http://emlab.berkeley.edu/users/webfac/held/international.pdf

Netherlands:
According to *Eurotransplant, there are 9 renal transplant centers in
the Netherlands.
http://www.transplant.org/index.php?country=netherlands&organ=kidney&id=transplantcenter&show_button=%AB+show

This site states the Netherlands has 10 renal transplant centers.
http://www.ifrr.net/id_europa.htm

36 out of every 1 million people in the Netherlands had a kidney
transplant in 2000, per this Berkeley site:
http://emlab.berkeley.edu/users/webfac/held/international.pdf

No dates are given for this data. It is probably within the date frame
you gave. While this appears to be a well maintained and up to date
site, I can?t vouch for which year these centers were listed. I have
sent an e-mail requesting how recently the list has was updated, which
I will post if and when I get an answer.

UK:

This UK Transplant site was last updated Jan. 9, 2004, and reports
that there are 27 renal transplant units in the UK.

Portugal
This Portuguese Health Ministry Transplant Coordinator site is in
Portuguese, and is written in frames. Click on the link in the left
hand column that says ?Agentes envolvidos?, scroll down almost to the
bottom to ?Unidades de Transplantaįão renal?, meaning Renal Transplant
Units. The site lists 8 transplant centers in Portugal.
(You can also copy the address below and paste it in Google?s page
translator, found here, ://www.google.com/language_tools?hl=en
Where it says ?Translate a web page? , then select from Portuguese to
English and click ?Translate?. Note that these translations can be
poor, but you can get the gist!)

France
There are, according to this site, Ouest Transplant, 42 approved
kidney transplant centers in France!

Here is the site in English, translated by Google

This site, in French, shows hospitals, and has transplants listed in
the far right column.

If you can read French (I can?t) you may be able to find further
information on this site.

Hi crystal,
I didn't see your clarification before I posted my answer, but I see
now that your guess was almost on the money for France! I still don't
know what made that particular country's information so obscure!

I sure hope this answer was what you were wanting! It was a most
interesting question to answer!

Sincerely,
crabcakes-ga

search. I appreciate the speed, the sources and just the interest!
