I've read there's a way to set ie 6 browser settings to disable pop-up
ads. However I've looked thru Tools + Internet Options and couldn't
find this option.

Where I saw this is (of all places) in the ny times. Paragraph below:

The biggest potential impact will come this summer when Microsoft
releases its Service Pack 2 for Windows XP, which will add a pop-up
blocker and many other features to Internet Explorer. For now,
Microsoft says Internet Explorer will not block pop-ups unless users
enable the feature.

Here's the link to the full article:

Hello patrice29,

Microsoft is currently doing large scale beta testing Service Pack 2,
it has not yet been released to the general public. It will however be
a free download this summer (or later depending on if it gets pushed
off a bit).

You can still disable popups though in IE6, the Google toolbar sounds
like it would be a good solution to your problem.

Here are the instructions:
1. Go to this URL: http://toolbar.google.com/
2. Click Download the Google Toolbar
3. Click Open.
4. Wait for it to download.
5. Read and Click Agree.
6. Read and click Enable or disable, then click next. (I recommend Enable).
7. Click Next.
8. Click Yes.
9. IE6 should restart the and toolbar should be install. Click Options
and make sure that the Popup Blocker has a checkmark next to it, then
click OK.

I hope that this solution works for you! Please let me know if you
require any further clarifications and I will do my best to further
assist you.

I understand where you might have been confused regarding the NY Times
article and thinking that IE6 currently has this functionality. The
New York Times was saying that when service pack 2 is released,
Microsoft will NOT have the popup blocker enabled, but that users
would need to enable it themselves. ("For now" is referring to the
fact that things could change at Microsoft and before summer they
might decide to have it enabled for all users.

All the best,

CNet.com offers pop-up killers free to try or purchase upgrades cheap.
Also, I use adaware from lavasoft.com free add killer/cleanup program.
I use both with great success.

I've used the Google Toolbar for ages (well, months) and I now swear by it.

Query, Will I get an Introductory Commission from Google .....?

(I'm not holding my breath.)

The quickest and easiest way to prevent pop-ups from appearing in your
browser would be to disable all scripting abilities inside your
browser. To do this in IE, just go to Tools > Internet Options, click
the Security tab and then Custom Levels, and disable Active Scripting
under Scripting.

But if you do this you'll soon realize that the Internet as you know
it quickly becomes useless. Just about every site on the Internet uses
some sort of scripting, be it JavaScript or Java, to enhance the user
experience through JavaScript, DHTML, or Cascading Style Sheets.

No scripting means no image roll-overs, style sheets, dynamic or
cascading menus, or pop-up windows, of coarse. Before you decide to
augment the way you view the Web, we have a few other viable solutions
for you. (from TechTV article)

Just remembered reading about this - not so usefull, but hey it's information eh?

If I could offer some advice, by far the best solution is not to use
IE. Mozilla.org makes Mozilla and Mozilla Firebird. Mozilla is the
leading browser package among people who know what is going on in the
PC world, and Firebird is their browser only version. (Mozilla comes
with email, newsreader and composer, so if you don't want any of that
Firebird is smaller and starts up faster.)

Both come with pop-up blocking and are skinnable. More importantly,
they are standards compliant and far, far faster than IE. Plus there
is the little fact that they don't do nasty things to your privacy
like IE does. Check em out!
