Hello Martin,
I?m pleased to be able to answer one of your questions! To be honest,
I misread your question the first time, and searched for retailers of
breath alcohol detectors. Fortunately for both of us, I reread your
question! Because I hate to let good information go to waste, I?ve
included the retailers as well, at the end of the answer!
Just as most of us call all brands of facial tissue ?Kleenex?, breath
alcohol detectors are commonly called ?breathalyzers?. There are three
types of breath alcohol detectors, based on different technology:
Breathalyzer - Uses a chemical reaction involving alcohol that
produces a color change
Intoxilyzer - Detects alcohol by infrared (IR) spectroscopy
Alcosensor III or IV - Detects a chemical reaction of alcohol in a fuel cell
All three of the above devices require the subject to blow into a
mouthpieces, and each device has an air chamber. From there, the
analytical methods are different, and very well explained, as well as
illustrated on the How Stuff Works site.

Back in the 80?s, I was working in a large medical center that was
having an employee alcohol abuse problem. A breathalyzer was ordered,
and a few co-workers and myself were to instruct ourselves how to
properly use the device. Among our small group was a rather high
strung young man who needed a lot of attention. As we were ?lamenting?
the fact that we had no real patient on which to test the
breathalyzer, this tense and energetic young man flung opened the
cabinet and grabbed a 5 liter bottle of pure reagent grade methanol.
He filled his mouth with the nasty, toxic stuff as we watched aghast!
He fully intended to spit it out and blow into the breathalyzer to get
a reading! As he turned red in the face he ran to the sink, spraying
the room with the expelled methanol! The poor guy was too embarrassed
to get medical attention, and luckily, he made an apparent quick
recovery! If he had any problems, he never let on! (Exposure to
methanol can cause blindness and even death!) I later read in the
manual, that only ethanol, and not methanol will not be detected by a
breathalyzer!
I hope I have provided you with the information you were seeking. If
not, please request an Answer Clarification, and I will gladly
research this further for you!

crabcakes-ga
