I have a Linux fileserver running Redhat 7.3 and Samba. When I use a
Mac to copy files to a share the permissions get all messed up. On the
Linux box, they show as 777 and admin/admin for the user/group. On the
Mac it shows as 744 and admin/wheel.

Is there any way to correct this?

Hello there.

You mention Samba, so I assume you're using OSX on the Mac side, correct?

Could you tell us a bit more about what you're doing? Where is the
file coming from in the first place? Was it created on a mac? What
were the mac permissions to start with?

When you say 'on the linux box', do you mean via the shell, or do you
mean through Samba they show up as 777/admin/admin?

By 'on the mac' do you mean through Samba, or after having copied the
file to the local machine?

Are you copying to any directories that might have a create mask on
them, such as a home directory on the mac? Have you tried copying the
files to your mac without using Samba? (such as through scp, rsync,
etc.)

Undoubtedly the answer is that yes, there's a way to correct it. The
only hard part is figuring out what it is. OSX and Linux are both
flexible enough that there's bound to be several ways to fix it.
Someone can probably help you. If nothing else, I've got a Linux
machine running Samba already, and can borrow an OSX-capable laptop
from my dad to run tests on.

Good evening,

Hi,

Yes.

I have a database (for a client actually) that is basically a flat
file on a samba share. They were running a SNAP server before without
issue. The file was initially created on a Mac but I don't know the
permissions right now. I'll try to find out. I don't think it should
matter because in my Samba config file I have a create make and
directory mask of 0777

I mean via SSH.

I mean when browsing the file on the Samba share (with the Mac) and viewing "info".

I have copied files via a web interface and had the same result.

I'm sure there is a way. :) I know SNAP uses Liunx. The main problem
is the permissions. Thanks for your help!
