I need comparative data on the cost and effectiveness of different types of tutoring for reading and math for elementary school age kids (a first grader and a fourth grader). In particular, I'm interested in the effectiveness (as defined by increase in grade-level ability) of Score!, Kumon and eSylvan. If there are other programs that have PROVEN effective, I would be interested in hearing about them as well. A good answer for me would be that (I'm making this up) after 2 years, a customer of X can expect their child to be reading one additional class level. |

I can't speak to the effectiveness of programs like Sylvan (and haven't found much data), but if you're interested in Math tutoring for your fourth-grader, this might interest you: ALEKS http://www.aleks.com The "Basic Math" program covers grades 4 - 6. My eldest son (a 5th grader) was doing very poorly in Math - his initial assessment in October showed that he hadn't yet mastered about half of the concepts he should have finished in fourth grade. His most recent assessment shows that he has completely caught up and it now performing right where he should be. --Missy |
