Hi John, it's nice to hear from you again.
I think it will be difficult to find the information you are seeking.
Immigration and Naturalization Service (INS) only reports the number
of H-1B applications but doesn't elaborate beyond that and neither do
other census takers.
"When the BLS calls you on the phone, it doesn?t ask if you are a U.S.
citizen, a foreign worker or an illegal alien. The statistics include
everyone who is working in this country. For example, a foreign
software programmer hired on a temporary work visa is counted as
employed.There are an estimated 1.7 million temporary foreign workers
in this country. I have to say ?estimated? because the Department of
Labor doesn?t keep track of those figures. Illegal immigrants are
counted, too. There are an estimated 10 million illegal immigrants in
this country."

The closest I came is this:
"Foreigners are having a tough time finding work in the US since
September 11 (State Department). Today the level of H-IB's issued is
similar to the level prior to 1998 when Congress raised the ceiling.
In 2001, H-IB's issued exceeded 160,000; today about 100,000 and
declining. The industries using H-IB visas:
* Computer related 38%.
* Architecture, engineering services 13%.
* Administrative specializations 11%.
* Education 10%.
* Medicine, health 7%.
* Other 21% (not defined)."
