Hello Werde,
This is a very interesting question, and one that is steeped in a lot
of controversy. There's been a lot of public outcry against having
these transmitter masts in populated areas because of the perceived
dangers. But the problem is, there's no *real* proof that these
perceived dangers are real and at a level that should be feared.

I myself believe that these dangers of radiation from mobile phone
transmitter stations negligible at this time. No definite conclusion
has really been made up to now on how dangerous of mobile phone
equipment is, and there is a lot of disagreement and controversy yet
on this issue. Well, you certainly you don't have to worry about
mobile phones making gas stations explode (unless the phone were a
disguised detonator, but that's James Bond movie stuff). I believe
these fears about mobile phone radiation are based on exaggerations of
facts and scientific findings, and the result was a health scare.
Whatever "proof" there may be that proximity to mobile transmitters is
dangers is always inconclusive at this time, and authorities are
constantly saying that radiation emmission levels from these apparati
are still at acceptable levels.

However, in case your friend might feel ill sometimes, he should
consult the doctor first before blaming everything on the mobile
transmitter. I sometimes feel that these mobile transmitters are
becoming scapegoats for the negligence and bad habits of humans. But I
also think the authorities do not assure that the mobile phone
apparati are risk-free. It's just that the risks are negligible and
not that high.
