Can you find for me a COMPLETE copy of the NTSB investigation report
into the plane crash that took the life of soul singer Otis Redding?
I'm not interested in the short summary the NTSB has posted on their
website..but the COMPLETE report. It should include the investigators
findings of fact as well as interviews with witness, tests
conducted..and of course, the final conclusion of the NTSB as to
cause. Again, I'm not interested in the synopsis but the complete
report. Thank you.

This kind of report needs to be requested via an FOIA request through
the NTSB. I just wrote the letter and will send it off for you. It may
take months to get the full report. But I have requested it.
This appears to be the best way to get this information, unless
there's a researcher living in Washington, D.C., who can visit the
office specifically.

Hello there, tlknghd-ga,

I live in Washington DC, and it's conceivable that I could visit the
NTSB offices and retrieve a copy of the report you're looking for.

But then what...?

Researchers and customers at Google Answers are not permitted to
exchange any personal information, so I could not ask you your address
and then mail the report to you.

Possibly, I could scan a few pages and post them on the website for
you to retrieve, but if the report is lengthy (as I suspect it would
be) this would be more trouble than it's worth.

Lastly, I could look over the report, and summarize the most salient
pieces of information, but I'm not sure how well that would meet your
needs.

Any suggestions...?

ok....the reason I specified that I want the FULL report and not the
synopsis, is because the NTSB has ONLY the synopsis on file. The NTSB
purges it files every 25 years. The only thing they keep beyond that
is the one page synopsis. The NTSB reports are public documents...no
FOI required. The problem is the documents simply don't exist at the
NTSB. They will have to be located in other places. The older eports
are out there in the world somewhere, frequently posted on line...I've
found others, but the Redding crash report eludes me. If someone can
even verify that it is somewhere not on-line...I will go there in
person and xerox it...I simply need to locate a complete copy
somewhere.
I hope this helps...if I can be of further assistance please let me know.

Whew....thanks. That saves me (and probably others, as well) from
travelling down the fruitless path of visiting the NTSB. I gather
you've already had fairly extensive contacts with them.

I'll continue looking for a copy of the full report, but I want to ask
you about another option. In just the last few months, dozens of
newspaper archives have become available online, and can be searched
for details of the crash itself, as well as any reports on
investigative findings that may have appeared months (or even years)
after the crash.

Would you be interested in a summary of what these newspaper reports
had to say? If so, any details you could provide from the summary
NTSB report (especially the date the report appeared) would assist in
the search.

Let me know what you think.

Hey, I appreciate your interest...
Here is the link to the only known info from the NTSB...
http://www.ntsb.gov/ntsb/brief.asp?ev_id=84416&key=0
It's the synopsis of their final report.
I'm not interested in the newspaper accounts...I have plenty of those.
I need the full/complete/final report the synopsis linked above refers to.
Thanks again for all your help.

I'm getting ready for bed now, with "Dock of the Bay" rattling around
in my head. I'll see if I can find anything tomorrow.

G'night.

Just as an FYI, the NTSB link provided is not for Otis Redding's plane
crash, but Jim Croce's.

"Croce and five other people were killed on Sept. 20, 1973, when their
light plane crashed on takeoff from Natchitoches, Louisiana. He had
played a college gig that night and was on his way to a date in
Dallas."

Otis died on Dec. 10, 1967. I still remember wearing my armband to school.

Otis Redding died at age of 26 when his plane crashed into Lake
Morona, Wisconsin, during a storm. He was en route to a concert in
Madison.

This is the NTSB synopsis on the crash of Redding's plane. Cause of
crash is 'undetermined.'
http://www.ntsb.gov/ntsb/brief.asp?ev_id=15906&key=0

Also, the correct location of the crash was Lake Monona, WI, not
Morona and time was 1525, rather than 1528.

A few more details on the plane:

http://www.planecrashinfo.com/famous50-60.htm

I've gone as far as I can with this. Hopefully another researcher
with more aviation knowledge and offline connections can provide with
a more detailed report.

Best of luck, gang!

Oops...sorry about posting the link for Jim Croce's crash...I was
doing some research on that one and inadvertently posted it instead of
the Redding crash.
I appreciate the interest in finding this report...anyone else wanna
take a stab at it?

Here's a bit more from Peter Guralnick's book "Sweet Soul Music" (p. 327):

"Sunday morning he called Zelma (his wife) around eight thirty. "He
was depressed about something, I remember that very well. And he
talked to little Otis, who was just three ... He said that he would
call me when he got to Madison." The weather was bad, but Otis was
bound and determined to make his gig at a Madison, Wisconsin, club
called the Factory. "He was very determined, always," says Speedo
Simms, off this tour because of a temporary falling out over money.
"He would go to extremes," says his bodyguard and boyhood friend,
Slyvester Huckaby, likewise off the road for unspecified reasons.
"That day they had grounded all commercial flights, but he was
reaching for stardom, and he didn't want to miss no {sic} dates."

At 3:28 in the afternoon the plane crashed into the icy waters of Lake
Monona just outside of Madison. ... The Bar-Kays all perished save for
Ben Cauley, the sole survivor, and James Alexander, who missed the
flight. It was three years almost to the day since the death of Sam
Cooke."

In the paragraph preceding, Guralnick says the day before Otis flew
into Cleveland in his new twin-engine Beechcraft for an appearance on
Don Webster's syndicated TV show, "Upbeat."

Hope that's helpful,
V
