Hello, I was unable to find a "smoking gun" concerning the oil filter problem. I did, however find significant information relating to a troubled repair history for the 1996 Chevrolet Astro. Some of the better web sites are below. Do you know the specific model of the 1996 Astro? The site from Edmunds may help you identify the exact model: 1996 Chevy Astro models listed on Edmunds.com <http://www.edmunds.com/used/1996/chevrolet/astro/index.html> Edmunds provides a consumer forum for Astro owners: Edmunds.com consumer discussion board on Chevy Astros http://www.edmunds.com/used/1996/chevrolet/astro/2drstdpassengervanextended/opinions.html?id=lin0425 MSN Car Point is another good auto site for the consumer: MSN Car Point site indicating significant engine trouble with 1996 Astro <http://carpoint.msn.com/Vip/UsedRelOver/Chevrolet/Astro/Used.asp> I recommend reading some of the negative comments on the MSN Car Point consumer forum. Unfortunately, the discussion board is not searchable so you'll have to go through all 52 one by one: MSN Consumer discussion board for the 1996 Astro <http://carpoint.msn.com/userreviews/reviewlist.asp?idmodel=529&search=MostRecent&num=50&trim=All&lang=All> Google search strategy-- keywords used: "1996 chevrolet astro" repair history chevrolet astro auto club chevy astro auto club "1996 chevrolet astro" recalls Good luck with your Astro. If you require clarification on any information I've included do not hestitate to click on "clarify answer." rapidreference-ga | |

It's a common thing with all makes and models, here is the reason: look at the top of an oil filter, you will see a black rubber seal. Sometimes, when you remove your old oil filter, this black rubber seal stays attached to the engine block, it shouldn't be there. So because the old rubber seal is still there, and the new oil filter also has it's rubber seal, there now is no longer enough screw threads to properly keep the oil filter attached. Hope this helps |
