Question ID: 299724
Have an ATI Radeon 7500 All in Wonder video card (AGP 4x/2x) in my
Gateway AMD 1 Ghz computer. Has worked fine for a long time. HAd to
reinstall windows XP due to an unrelated problem. After restalling,
vid display was corrupt. Have tried several sets of ATI drivers
(Catalyst)for this card and nothing seems to work. MAchine
successfully boots one time if card is uninstalled before rebooting
(basic Windows VGA drivers used). Then windows begins to detect and
install ATI drivers and then can only boot in safe mode.

Any ideas?

Hi,

Are you sure you installed the correct driver for your card (ATI
Radeon 7500 All in Wonder for WinXP)?

How did you install the driver? Did you uninstall the old driver
before installing the new one? Did you simply just install the driver
using the "Update driver" button?

If your driver has an uninstall option in the "Add/Remove programs"
list, you should uninstall it first from there before installing the
new driver using its own installation program.

I installed Catalyst 3.10 drivers downloaded from the ATI site. After
uninstalling the OLD driver when windows XP restarts, I am unable to
prevent drivers from being loaded by windows XP. I can prevent other
ATI devices from auto installing (Theater Audio, Theater Video, etc)
but not the video card. If I uninstall and then force Windows to
detect new device it will not detect the 7500 AIW card, only
peripheral devices (Theater Audio, etc.).

I should also mention that I am unable to untinstall ATI Media center
from the "Add/Remove Programs" dialogue box.
Initially, when trying to install a driver, I WAS able to select a
driver from a list ( I was booting Windows in a really low rez
graphics mode). After driver was installed, screen was unusable and
after a pause I received a blue screen error regarding a "hard stop"
and a memory dump to hard drive began. I have been unable to boot
machine other than safe mode (except one time immediately after I
uninstall the ATI driver and reboot, which I described before).

Tork811,

Does your ATI Radeon 7500 belong to the:

All-In-Wonder 128 Pro Series
All-In-Wonder 128 Series
All-In-Wonder Pro Series

The box makes no reference to 128 Pro or 128 or Pro series. ATI's web
site shows the "Radeon" series as a seperate group. The user's guide
applies to:
All in Wonder RADEON 8500DV
All in Wonder 7500 (my unit)
All in Wonder Radeon

Thanks for your reply Tork811. Please try the following. Go to:

ATI Driver Download Page
http://www.ati.com/support/driver.html

Choose Windows XP:

Graphic Driver --> Radeon Family
Multimedia Center --> All In Wonder Radeon Family
Hydravision --> Radeon Family

Before you install, please make sure to uninstall whatever driver you
have installed. Read the installation instructions carefully and
install each software properly. Please tell us if the problem is
solved.

I really thought the Catalyst drivers included all that.
Nevertheless, I did as you instructed. After installing the
Multimedia center files I rebooted. Since the video driver was not
installed, the system booted fine. BEFORE when I did this there were
several other installations that I was prompted for after the vid
driver autoinstall. These installations fall under the general
category "Media" but included ATI Rage Theater, ATI Rage Audio,
Crossbar, among others. When I tell Windows to install automatically
it now says that it can't find the drivers.

When I boot now with vid driver installed the video corruption is
different. It DID appear as two bright pixels near top of screen.
Now it's a jagged magenta band across the middle third of the screen.

Something else to note. When I install the catalyst display drivers
(which include TV Capture and control panel) I get an error message
that says the installation cannot find required hardware elements
required. No clue what that means.

You should note that I also tried installing the display driver alone
(low bandwidth download option). Got message stating that directx 9.0
must be installed before proceding. I installed DirectX 9.0 after I
reinstalled Windows xp.

Hello Tork811

Based on what you said, it is possible that your video card or,
although remote, a part of your mobo has become defective. The reason
is no matter what driver you install, be it the Catalyst or the
standard drivers for the Radeon Family drivers, if it contains the
driver for your video card, there's no reason for it not to function
properly.

However, it's also possible that your video card is not properly
seated or the cable connection at the back is loose. These are usually
the reasons for the abnormal pixels or bands that appear on your
screen.

It is also possible that there is something wrong with the installation procedure.

Have you tried contacting ATI Customer Care about your problem? You
can contact them through this link:

ATI Customer Care
http://www.ati.com/support/contact.html

At this point, I believe that your problem can be resolved if one of
us can do an ocular inspection of your system and personal, which of
course is not possible. In as much as I want to help you, I regret to
say that I can be of no further assistance. For the meantime, please
leave your question open so that other researchers can give it a try.

Regards,
Feilong
