I am trying to set up a wireless network. The hardware is as follows:
Laptop: Sony VAIO PCG-FXA48, running Windows XP and Zone Alarm firewall
Internet: Charter cable modem
Cable Modem: D-Line DCM-200
Router: Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router WRT54G
Notebook Adapter: Linksys Wireless-G WPC54G

Here's what's been going on so far. I have the internet currently
hooked up thru the ethernet port on my computer and everything works
fine. I first tried to use the set-up CD-ROM, but it wouldn't set-up
because tbe first thing it tries to do is "check my internet
connection," but it tells me that my "computer isn't connected to the
internet" even though it was and I did have internet access.

So then I tried the alternative directions. I turned everything off,
set-up the router (using an ethernet cable instead of wireless) and
turned everything back on in the order the directions told me to
(cable modem, router, computer).

Here's the problem. My router's Power, WLAN, and 1 lights come on,
but the "Internet" light never comes on. I called Linksys tech
support and they had me check all the connections, try the reset
button, and even put in the notebook card. We were able to establish
a connection between the notebook card and the router, but the router
was never able to make a connection to the internet. They eventually
told me that either the cables or the router was faulty and had me
return it. So I exchanged the router, but am still having the exact
same problem.

I've recycled the power dozens of times. All of the cables are new
and I have checked them to make sure they work. Could someone please
help me to figure out what I am doing wrong? Please let me know if
you need some additional information. Thanks!!

Hi,

Just to clarify the connections.

The cable wire goes to the cable modem.

From the cable modem, a network wire connects the modem to the
"Internet" part of the router.

From the router, there is a wired connection to the laptop.

Is this right?

I think I might know the problem. I set up a wireless connection at
home recently, and I'm sure I can help you out.

That's right. I'm trying the hardwired approach to get the router
working before I try the laptop card again. Thanks.

According to you, the "Internet" light never comes on. That is
obviously the root of the entire problem. The other light indicates
that there is no problem in the connection between the router and
computer.

I want you to double check you connected the wires properly (steps C &
D in the manual - ftp://ftp.linksys.com/qinstalls/wrt54g_qi.pdf )

That's how it's set up. I even tried it again just now to be sure and
still had the same result. The internet light never came on and I was
never able to access the internet.

When I try this with my firewall active, my computer says that it has
detected a new network and it makes me go through the process of
recognizing and accepting the new network. I've tried setting up the
router with and without my firewall active so that doesn't seem to be
the problem.
