I have Windows 98 operating system and Outlook Express 6. I recntly
had a new harddrive installed. Any email I receive that has an
attachment, has a notice written in yellow when I try to bring it up
that says, "OE removed access to the following unsafe attachments in
your mail." I am sure that most if not all do not contain unsafe
attachments. I am unable to find anything in help that I have access
to that does anygood. I feel this is probably a setting somewhere
that needs to be changed but I can't figure out what or where.

Hi instanswer,

If you can't open attachments and you are running Outlook Express,
version 6, by default the program blocks attachments. One of the
security options has been set to protect you from malicious
attachments. Most virus attacks come this way. Here's how to get
around that.

Left click on Tools, Left click on Options, Left click on the Security
tab. Where it says Virus Protection at the top, uncheck:

**Do not allow attachments to be saved or opened that could
potentially be a virus.**

Can't Open OE6 Attachments at:
http://www.steve.maurer.net/tutorials/email_tutorials/oe6_attachments.htm
has an in depth explanation along with images.

"Nice feature, but unfortunately Outlook Express applies it a little
heavy-handedly! The program block ALL attachments by default, even
picture files. Outlook 2002 has a similar feature, but you can
manually remove file types from the list. In Outlook Express 6,
however, the only thing you can do is turn off the feature if you want
to enable your attachments"

"Here is how to turn off this security option. Understand that I am
NOT telling you that you should do this. This will allow all
attachments to be opened, so if you do this make sure your Anti-virus
software is up to date! (You do have Anti-virus software running,
don't you?)"

I had personal knowledge regarding this security feature and also did
a Google Search using keywords:

open attachments Outlook Express
security features Outlook Express

I have experienced this problem as well. Another way around it,
without permanently changing the security options, is to simply click
"forward" on the message that has the attachment. A new box will open
containing the original message and attachment. In this new box, you
can click on the attachment and save or launch it. Hope this is
helpful.
