I need to rent a storage locker:
* for long-term (1-2 year) storage
* it can be anywhere on the fast freeway route from San Francisco to
Los Angeles (i.e. Hwy 5)
* I need a 5' x 6' x 8' or a 4' x 10' x 6' locker
* I won't need any in-and-out access to it -- I only plan on
revisiting it once, to clean it out, in a year or two (I'm going
overseas to work, but returning elsewhere and moving my stuff when I
return). I'm willing to pay by the year
What is the cheapest rate I can get? |

OK, if not the cheapest, the best rate you can find

Hello Doctorow,
Hmm, it seems I couldn't find any information online about storage
lockers along the highway. I could find self-storage facilities and
storage facilities within cities or towns. I've found a reference to a
highway locker in an article, but I'm not sure if they're under the
self-storage services or something else. Are self-storage facilities
the kind that you're looking for? I admit to not being familiar with
this sort of storage service.

Self-storage is definitely what I'm looking for. It's ok if it's not
directly on the highway -- anything within 30 minutes' drive of the
highway is fine.

Hello Doctorow,
I've found a website that is a directory of probably every
self-storage service in the country, though I could not find pricing
information for each company. At least this directory marks with a
star at least each company that it recommends or considers a top-notch
service... but I assume it's not enough for you. I'll keep you posted
on anything else I turn up.

That's interesting, but nowhere near what I need, since figuring out
which of the reasonly rated storage places lay along my route and then
calling them to get rates would be highly labor-intensive.

Hello Doctorow,
I fin it difficult to get the information you may need, as I am not
located in the United States. Should I be unable to get what you need,
another researcher may be able to do it.

Have a look at this site:
http://www.storagewest.com/rates.htm#california
They have units in the sizes you need, and the prices are listed right
on the page...I'm not saying it's the cheapest OR the closest, but at
least the info's readily available.
Let me know if this comes close to the type of information you're
looking for. If so, I'll see if I can unearth some other, similar
sites.

Well, that looks like the kind of place where a researcher (i.e., not
me) could go to figure out who had the best price all right. The
prices listed on the pages aren't necessarily for the storage size I
specified, though, and correlating with the proximity to the SF-LA
route is the kind of work that I was hoping the researcher who took
this question would do.

Hello doctorow-ga,
There are dozens (maybe hundreds) of self-storage facilities between
San Francisco and Los Angeles. I tried to find some benchmarks on what
the size of rental unit you?re looking for should cost. I found one
article that reported that Monthly Rental Rates in California in 2003
for a 5x10 unit ranged from $33 Low to $185 High and $85 Average.
I also found several directories that gave listings of cities so that
you could contact the local self-storage vendors to get a quote for
your rental needs. The members of some of these directory listings
provide their rates online, but most of them only give you an address
and phone number so you have to contact them. It will be impossible to
find the ?cheapest rate? without contacting them all.
It seems it might be more productive for you to set a price range that
would be acceptable to you to make this into a manageable project.
Would this suit your needs?
I look forward to your clarification.

OK -- can you find me a $33/mo storage that's as close as possible to
1. San Francisco
2. The freeway between SF and LA
that rents for about $33/month, and that gives a complimentary month
for one-year payment upfront?
Thanks!
