I am seeking a PhD program, preferably in the US, but I am open to any
English-speaking country. I have a bachelor's degree in history from
Univ of California, Santa Barbara and a master's degree in counseling
psychology from Dominican Univ in San Rafael, CA. My area of interest
is adolescent sexualities. I want to be able to research this subject
using qualitative methodologies (ethnographies, in-depth interviews,
documentaries, case studies, etc.) and I am interested in
cross-cultural applications as well. I am having difficulty "fitting
into" the typical departments as my focus seems to be
interdisciplinary. So far, I have found that my research could be
"housed" in the following disciplines; sociology, anthropology,
psychology, journalism, film/cultural studies, women's studies,
international development, and public health. I have also tried
looking for mentors at universities via publications, but have not
found anyone who is doing what I hope to do. One of my concerns is
that I get credit for my master's degree (48 units)and I am not particularly
wedded to psychology. A final clarification is that I am not at all
interested in high theory/rhetoric but rather in the creative aspect
of applied research. My question is: where is a school that would
welcome me?

Oops, I need to add that I am not looking to work remotely through
distance learning programs...

I have thought of designing my own program but I need to be employable
after completing the PhD. That is, I hope to join a department/school
with a good reputation where I can get direction and support for this
research (academic and financial). After the PhD, I would like to
teach at a small college (not a major univ) and I need to be able to
teach in an already recognized discipline (sociology, etc.). Thus, I
feel I need a PhD in one of these disciplines--either that or come up
with something brilliant along the way and be able to be an
"independent scholar!"

Thank you for your help ! (emhs)

I am pretty sure that you can design your own doctoral program in this
specialty (or any other) at Fielding Institute or Union Institute.
Both of them are designed as long distance independent study with
advisor assistance. At Fielding you can take as long as you wish (but
will be charged for additional semesters). Not sure how Union works.
I think Fielding's tuition is $16,000 a year.
