I'm looking for a book that I believe is titled 'the underground
dictionary'. As you might imagine - it's not a book, it's actually a
dictionary containing slang terms. A more complete answer would
include instructions on where to purchase this dictionary.

The book was hardcovered, and old. The book was probably 20 years old
or so. Hence why it is difficult to find, but I would have thought
there would be a
reprint or something..

thanks, and good luck. I'm probably most interested in learning how
you tracked it down..

yes, that is it.

Funny too.. the author, Dr. Eugene Landy as it turns out, was the
Beach Boys Brian Wilson's doctor I think -- Dr. Landy tried
[successfully?] to help Brian Wilson to get clean.

Check out the song 'Brian Wilson' by The Barenaked Ladies
'...Dr. Landy tell me I'm not just a pedagogue'

If this is indeed the book you want, would you like me to find other
places where it may be purchased?

Incidentally, you're right on target about Dr. Landy. I just found this:

"Landy, Eugene E. The Underground Dictionary. Simon & Schuster,
1971... Extremely entertaining, compact dictionary of counterculture /
subculture terms & expressions. A typical entry gives seven
definitions for 'freak' -- and this is followed by separate entries
for 'freak freely' 'freak off' 'freak out' 'freak rock' 'freak trick'
and the ever popular 'freak up' ! It's also worth noting that the
author is the very same Eugene Landy who gained later notoriety for
his allegedly Svengali-like relationship with erstwhile Beach Boy
Brian Wilson. Freaky!"

What is there to say but OH, WOW, MAN...

Some more purchase options would be nice, but that's optional.. don't
spend too much time on it.

I guess I'd be more interested in knowing how you found the book..
search parameters etc.. I tried a number of searches in Google, but
didn't find any solid leads.

Thaks for your help, pinkfreud.

Regarding how I found the book, I wish I had a fascinating tale to
tell, but I'm afraid there wasn't anything magical to it. I own this
book (having purchased it way back in the days of free love, disco
music, and Richard Nixon), and I remembered that the author's last
name was Landy. I headed over to AddAll.com, my favorite
book-searching tool, and I did a "Used & Out of Print Books" search,
using the author's name, "Landy", and the book's title, "Underground
Dictionary." That produced the list linked above.

Thanks for an interesting quest! I had forgotten all about "The
Underground Dictionary." Now I am going to have to ransack my house
until I find my old copy. And where is that mood ring?...

Best wishes,
