I have been researching my family and on a death certificate my
grandfathers hometown is Podmochle, Bohemia. I cannot find it on any
atlas. Do you know where this place is, Austria maybe?

Hi karrie-ga:

Bohemia lies mostly in the present-day Czech Republic. An excellent
online map of the Czech Republic can be found at:

http://mapy.atlas.cz/aquariusnet/frm_uvod.asp

Unfortunately, I was not able to locate a "Podmochle" in the Bohemian
district. It may be a very small town that does not appear on the map.

If I find anything else, I'll let you know.

karrie-ga:

I was able to find a small town called Podmokly, in the western part
of the Bohemian district. Here is a link to the map:

M50&S_ROUTEID=0&DS=RETM100&SC=64000

(it's a very long link, you may need to cut and paste it)

While the spelling is not exactly the same, it may well be the town.

If you are willing to accept Podmokly as the Answer, please let me
know by replying to this Clarification Request, and I will post it as
the Answer.

Hi there

Karrie had done a good job, identifing a possible village,
Neverthless, I may be able to give your more details.

I have here complete list of towns of Bohemia and Moravia
(which form the Czech Rep) and these few are close:

podmoklany
podmokly (PS)
podmokly (RO)
podmokly (KT)
podmoky (3 times)
podmolí
podmy?e
...
I can also give you some pointers to geneological sites
and proffessional researchers (outside of GA) who
charge more then $2 :-) but are pretty good at this.

It may help if you post the name, year of birth.
In the old times registers were kept by religion
 so that too can help.

Thank you for your response. I'm not sure if Podmokly (Podmochle) is
one place or afew. On the map there are quite a few choices and they
don't appear to be the same place. Please let me know if there is
more than one.

Hi

I hope I am right assuming that
that was a request to post it as an answer.

There are three podmokly, the code in parans is the County(= okres in czech).

podmokly (PS)
podmokly (RO)
podmokly (KT)

It is a czech word (meaning is 'wet place' or 'place under the wetlands' )

Czech Republic is divided into 14 districts (kraj), listed here:
http://www.urady.cz/encyklopedie/seznam.phtml?typ=42

Each is divided into counties (okresy) listed under each district.

All counties (and their codes) are shown here: (Official server)
http://mesta.obce.cz/

Typing 'Podmokly' into search windowws brings this:

  Podmokly Okres Klatovy (=KT)
  Podmokly Okres Rokycany (=RO)

and each has a web-page with location of village shown by a red dot

http://mesta.obce.cz/vyhledat.asp?id_org=12404 for KT
http://mesta.obce.cz/vyhledat.asp?id_org=12407 for RT

what about PS ? It is also in district of Pilsen (Plzen, home of famous
Pilsner beer) near highway E49 (You can see PS next to RO on map of counties)

That map is clickable, if you click you get on PS you get
 http://mesta.obce.cz/vyhledat2.asp?okres=3407&vzhled=ul

map of the county Pilsen-North (Plzen Sever), podmokly are not listed,
and reason is probably this: Small villages are often clustered
administratively under a larger township nearby. It is on the map
though.

In any case, all three are near to each other in District of Plzen
and here are maps for this area of Bohemia:

http://katalog.atlas.cz/spolecnost/mesta_a_obce/plzensky_kraj/

If you are happy with the answer, please do rate it . It helps me
to improve my skills if I know how well,or how badly, I did answer.
If you are not happy, please do ask for clarification.

Apparently Podmokly is a name appearing at least twice in the Czech Republic:
http://www.jewishgen.org/BohMor/czk-ps.htm

For example:
http://reference.allrefer.com/encyclopedia/D/Decin.html

This could be helpful:
http://mapy.atlas.cz/aquariusnet/frm_search.asp?S_LANG=EN&searchFor=podmokly
