Hello, I have a compaq presario 1510 laptop, from past couple of weeks something weird is happening. My laptop suddenly shuts down with no message. When I restart it, it doesnt even tell me that last time it shut down improperly. I am suspecting that either CPU temperature or hard disk temperature is too high thats why it shuts down. I tried searching for softwares that will detect various temperatures inside a computer, But could not find any that is compatible with my laptop. I have tried mother board monitor and speedfan. Please note that software should be compatible with my laptop. |

Just out of curiousity, what operating system are you running on this laptop? Also, what are the load conditions on the laptop when it shuts down? Are the ventilation ports blocked? Also, it looks like the Presario 1510 uses a desktop processor, not a laptop one, so it is missing some of the low-power/heat reduction features of a mobile processor. |

wy-ga, Thanks for info. I am running windows XP professional operating system on it, About load conditions, its extremely light, I use it to access internet only. But when I try to run virus scan, it shuts down when scanning is halfway. Ventilation ports are not blocked, and it was just fine before couple of weeks. going to my computer->properties it tells me I have Pentium 4 (pro) 2.2 GHz processor. Any help to determine temperature is appreciated. |

The optimus temp for a Intel P4 processord is 45 Celsius degrees (about 77 F), and for AMD processors (XP processors) about 50 Celsius (82 F). More temp will be worse for the processor. And it works more slowly (and might be dangerous). Look at the ShutDown temp in your BIOS. (Turn ON, Enter the BIOS, and leave on the computer -sorry bad english- for a while, then enter in PC Health Status on the BIOS and look at the temp). Be Luck! |

The Compaq Presario 15xx series include "Intel Speedstep" or "AMD PowerNow!" controls (depending on the processor installed - in your case it would be "Intel Speedstep" for the Pentium 4 processor). Those controls allows you to set several options that can help with heat dissipation and power use. To access the above described controls from Windows XP, click the "Start" button and select "Control Panel". If your control panel is in "Category View" mode (that is, the control panel will show the title "Pick a category"), select the "Performance and Maintenance" icon and then the "Power Options" icon. If you are in "Classic View" mode, select the "Power Options" icon. Select the "Advanced" tab to access the "Intel Speedstep" or "AMD PowerNow!" controls. If you require help with a specific option, click the question-mark icon in the upper right of the "Power Options" window and then select the option you're inquiring about. Also, make sure your power cord is fully plugged into the laptop. I'm saying that because I've experienced several incidents where the laptop was working from battery and continuously shut itself off without notice (due to low charge) while I thought I was using the AC power source ;-) |
