Could I please get a concise answer and/or comments?
I have a Palm Tungsten E and would like to find out more about reading
e-books on my handheld. How does it work? Searched Amazon.com and
they have a substantial selection of ebooks, but before I buy anything
- how do I know it's compatible with my Palm?

Do I download the ebook to my computer - and somehow use an
application to convert it into a format that's compatible with my Palm
and transfer? ...

Or, do I download the ebook to my computer, transfer it to my Palm and
the reader is simply used to open the file?

Where can I get a "reader" that is compatible with the Palm OS ...
that's cheap / free?

Hi emcy,

Sorry, there are no quick and short answers to your questions, but
there are terrific step-by-step instructions online which will guide
you through the entire process. I'll start by giving you brief answers
to your questions but the best thing to do is to skip down to "Lesson
1: HELPFUL COMPUTER SKILLS" before trying to understand any of it -
but not to worry, once you are all set up, you'll have access to lots
of free e-books to try before having to buy one.

 - how do I know it's compatible with my Palm?

You will look at the formats of the e-book and choose PALM.

 - Do I download the ebook to my computer - and somehow use an
application to convert it into a format that's compatible with my Palm
and transfer? ... Or, do I download the ebook to my computer,
transfer it to my Palm and the reader is simply used to open the file?

You'll download the e-books to your computer, HotSync your Palm
device, and then launch the Palm Reader software. From there you will
open a book.

- Where can I get a "reader" that is compatible with the Palm OS ...
that's cheap / free?

Quick (stupid) :) questions - what do you (or the website) mean by:

"Note: Adobe Reader for Palm OS, version 3.05 is recommended to be

Professional, or Acrobat 6.0 Standard to experience the full product

Adobe Reader for Palm OS 3.05 vs Adobe Reader 6.0 etc etc. Are the
6.0 versions of Adobe - the PC versions?

So, does this mean that I have to install Adobe Reader for Palm OS
(desktop application) on my PC and I have to have Adobe Reader 6.0 on
my PC as well - so that it can convert regular .pdf files into
something that's compatible with my Palm?

If/when I'm all set - do I use the Adobe Reader for Palm OS desktop
application to transfer the ebook, or do I still use the Palm HotSync
application as per normal ... or does it make no difference?

Will go check out the links. Thanks. :)

Hi emcy,

Quick (stupid) :) questions - what do you (or the website) mean by:

No, they are not stupid questions - there's alot to understand and
organize, but once you download your first e-book, it will all become
clearer (or that's the way my brain works anyway).

"Adobe Reader for Palm OS 3.05 vs Adobe Reader 6.0 etc etc. Are the
6.0 versions of Adobe - the PC versions?"

Yes.

"So, does this mean that I have to install Adobe Reader for Palm OS
(desktop application) on my PC and I have to have Adobe Reader 6.0 on
my PC as well - so that it can convert regular .pdf files into
something that's compatible with my Palm?"

It's best to have either Adobe Reader 6 or Adobe Acrobat 6 (pro or
standard) on your PC. I'm sorry, I see that I might've confused you
with my "(make sure you have Adobe Reader 6 installed first before
installing the Palm Reader)". I should've said that it would be best
to have Adobe 6 (reader or acrobat) on your PC first.

* Emcy, I was just reading about the Tungsten E and it says the Adobe
Reader and the Palm Reader are bundled with it - so you should already
have them.

Bundled Apps:
"Applications bundled with the device include Adobe Reader, Documents
to Go, MobileDB, Keyboard, Magic Dogs, PalmReader,..."
http://www.pdarcade.com/modules.php?name=Reviews3&rop=showcontent3&id=3

"If/when I'm all set - do I use the Adobe Reader for Palm OS desktop
application to transfer the ebook, or do I still use the Palm HotSync
application as per normal ... or does it make no difference?"

After you download the e-book to your PC (do some free ones first),
you will HotSync your Palm and then launch the Palm Reader on your
Palm.

"Will go check out the links. Thanks. :)"

Following the step-by-step guide, lesson by lesson, and you should be
ok. It will get you all organized and reading e-books on your PC. Once
that is all working fine and you understand it, then it is time to
worry about the Palm and it will be easy because you've "done your
homework". This is when you will go to the Adobe Reader Palm OS
website and follow that guide (not to worry, it's not six more
lessons!).

questions and I will be happy to try and help. Let me know when you've

Hi hummer. I've got my first e-book on my Palm - am using Acrobat
(for now) ... but the format is a little bit dodgy. The desktop
application that transfers the e-book to my Palm had to do some
conversion, from .pdf to .PDF (?) Is this normal?

Clarification of Answer by hummer-ga on 29 Jan 2004 07:38 PST
Hi emcy,

Hey, good news! That was fast.

Ok, .pdf files are converted to PDF (Adobe Portable Document Format)
for viewing on your Palm, so that is fine.

What version of Acrobat are you using? Make sure everything is updated
- Adobe Reader 6 or Acrobat 6 and Palm Reader will give the best
quality.

Actually, what I meant to say was that I have Adobe Reader 6.0
installed on my home computer. I don't know if the .pdf was converted
to PDF but it did some sort of conversion anyway. Basically, in my
PDA - the file name still has .pdf not PDF (so I'm still a little
confused), and it's 362Kb - but on the home computer, the same
document is 288Kb.

Anyway, thanks for your help. Will experiment some more - and maybe
move on to the Palm Reader you recommended.

You're welcome, emcy, and thank you too for your nice notes and
rating. Yes, I think trying the Palm Reader should do the trick - I
hope so, anyway. Well, take care and enjoy your new books. hummer
