a Russian Cosmonaut first name I belive Yuri, went up into space and
proclaimed, "We have proof that there is no G-d, because I was there
and didn't see him. I forgot the exact quote, year and name of
cosmonaut. I have a lecture this evening that I would like to use this
piece of information in. Also anything of a similar vein, where a
person looks for spirutality in a physical plane and doesn't find it.
Kind of like trying to weigh light...

I believe you're remembering remarks made by the Soviet Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin.

"The first man to orbit the earth, cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin had, in
1961, eliminated the possibility of God. He had been to the heavens,
looked around, and reported from orbit, "I don't see any god up here."

"In his book, The Jewish Theory of Everything, Max Anteby writes, 'On
April 12, 1961, a young Russian cosmonaut stepped in front of the
cameras, as he was about to board his spacecraft, Vostok l, for what
was going to be man's first voyage into outer space. Yuri Gagarin
announced, 'Now I go to meet nature face to face in an unprecedented
encounter.'

For the next several hours, Gagarin encountered nature in a way that
no man had done before, far beyond the reaches of the clouds, to a
place bordering on the infinite. He had an awesome responsibility to
chronicle for mankind what existed outside the Earth's realm and man's
control.

Upon his return to earth he remarked, 'Now I know that God does not
exist, because I was there and I didn't see him.'"

A similar remark is attributed to Cosmonaut Gherman Titov:

"AUTHOR: Gherman Stepanovich Titov (1935?2000)

QUOTATION: Some say God is living there [in space]. I was looking
around very attentively, but I did not see anyone there. I did not
detect either angels or gods?. I don?t believe in God. I believe in
man?his strength, his possibilities, his reason.

fair, Seattle, Washington, May 6, 1962, as reported by The Seattle
Daily Times, May 7, 1962, p. 2."

I think it should be noted that the Soviet Union at the time permitted
no religious expression. Any Communist that professes athiesm at the
time
was of course a "good Communist."
