I have Norton Antivirus 2003 Professional edition installed on my
computer which is running Windows 98. I also have a subscription
service to fetch latest virus definitions from the Symantec site. A
few days ago I noticed that after running "live update" my virus
definitions were still not updating. So I went to the Symantec site
and used Virus Definitions (Intelligent Updater) to fetch the updates.
This seems to have done something to the program itself and Norton
virus engine will not start. In the Norton window, both the "Auto
protect" field and "Virus Definition" fields are marked "error" in
red. Any help in correcting the problem will be appreciated.I would
rather like to avoid uninstalling and reinstalling Nortons, if
possible. However, if that is the only option I would like detailed
instruction on doing that without losing my update subscription which
still has about 8 months left.
Thanks

Have you installed anything new just before the problem started? Or
anything else that happened just before that?

I did go to the Norton site and tried to fetch the updates using their
"intelligent updater".. maybe Norton installed the "intelligent
updater" on my system. Usually, to fetch updates I used to just click
on "live Update". The "live update" option would show as successfully
having installed the latest virus definitions but the Norton window
would still show the definitions as outdated and would prompt me again
do a "Live Update". I did this repeadtedly with the same result. Maybe
for some reason the updates were fetched but not installed in my
computer even though I was receiving the message that they had done so
immediately after running "."live update". This was the reason I went
directly to the Symantec site and used their intellignet updater.

I also use Norton Prof 2003 (Running only Antivirus and Utilities, the
rest I did not install) and I've used Intelligent Updater with no ill
effect at all. Intelligent Updater should not be damaging at all to
use. Try to see if the Options relevant to Auto Protect and others
have been turned off, and see if manually turning them on again will
help. If not, try running the Intelligent Updater again, or maybe you
could get the latest one, and see if it fixes when you install that.
If they don't, you might need to re-install Norton
Systemworks/Antivirus.

Are you sure your system isn't infected the the MyDoom virus? This
latest virus that's been in the news this week is said to shut down
antivirus software and keep it from working.

I had a similiar problem, I solved it by installing LiveUpdate 2.0.39:

ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/liveupdate/lusetup.exe

I am having problems with NAV 2004 for home, after upgrading my system
from Windows 98 to Windows XP. As you may have discovered, tech help
by phone is available from Symnantec at a rather hefty fee. I am
trying to get this solved using the online, email tech-help option.
But they have been slow to respond.
Frustrating.

Scribe,
When I moved from Win98 to XP (Prof), I had to uninstall and reinstall
Norton Systemworks 2003 because it could not be carried over to the
new OS (which is what was reported by selecting "Check system
compatibility"). Norton will install in a different way in each
operating system. I believe the same goes for 2004. Try uninstalling
then reinstalling it in WinXP.
