Dear Kivo,

Several events shadowed 1994. On one hand, Black South Africans voted
in the country's first multi-racial elections. On the other, in
another place in Africa, the Rwandan genocide began to take place
(See: PBS Special <http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/frontline/shows/evil/>).

On the one hand, Israel signed a peace treaty with Jordan, but on the
other - terrorist explode a Jewish community Centre in Argentina,
killing 98 and wounding scores more.

And in the midst of it, America was more interested in OJ Simpson,
whose wife was found dead that year in her house; in the Menendez
brothers, who were tried for murdering the parents; in Tonya Harding,
who ordered the clubbing of her opponent; and in Lorena Bobbit, whose
actions are today a verb, that exists internationally (" guess it's
not all that suprising, but did you know that "bobbit" (as in John
Wayne Bobbit) had become a verb? Not only that, but one used
internationally? The "Times of India" had a recent article with the
headline "Man bobbitised by alleged victim". SOURCE: Vinylrake Blog
<http://www.vinylrake.org/blogs/archives/2004_01_01_flot_archive.html>).

Wikipedia <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1994> provides several central events:

American and International Politics
===================================
"January 1 - North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) goes into effect"

"January 14 - President of the United States Bill Clinton and Russian
President Boris Yeltsin sign the Kremlin accords which stop the
preprogrammed aiming of nuclear missiles to targets and also provide
for the dismantling of the nuclear arsenal in the Ukraine."

"March 24 - At an election rally in Tijuana, Mexican presidential
candidate Luis Donaldo Colosio is assassinated. Mario Aburto Martinez
is arrested for the crime and confesses on the same day."

"April 7 - Massacres of Tutsis begin in Kigali, Rwanda. "

"April 26 - South Africa holds its first multiracial elections. "

"July 18 - In Buenos Aires, an explosion destroys a building housing
several Jewish organizations killing 96 and injuring many more."

"October 15 - After three years of exile in the US, Haiti's president
Aristide returned to his country. "

Iraq Disarment Crisis - <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iraq_disarmament_crisis>

October 26 - Jordan and Israel sign a peace treaty

Sports:
======
Winter Olympics in Norway. During the preparations, "January 6 - Nancy
Kerrigan is clubbed on the right leg by an assailant under orders from
figure skating rival Tonya Harding."

Society
=======
The Bobit Affair: "January 10 - Lorena Bobbitt goes on trial for
severing the penis of her husband John (Manassas, Virginia)." Other
"legal" news are the trail of Lyle and Erik Menendez for the murder of
their parents; and of course:

"June 13 - NFL star OJ Simpson's ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her
friend Ronald Goldman were murdered outside Nicole's house in
Brentwood, California "

Transportation
==============
"May 6 - The Chunnel, which took 15,000 workers over seven years to
complete, opens between England and France. Travelers can now travel
between the two countries in 35 minutes. "

I hope that helped. My search term: 1994. Please contact me if you
need any further clarification on this answer before you rate it.

Bill Hicks died of pancreatic cancer on Feb. 26, 1994, at age 32. The
albums "Arizona Bay" and "Rant in E-Minor" were issued posthumously as
a reminder of Hicks' great talent and inventiveness.

"He was a genius. He was one of the five best comics I've ever seen in
my life." -- Dennis Miller
