I'm looking for the largest city (in land area, not population) and
lake (also in area) for each of the 50 states. I don't want to have to
go to a web site (or multiple sites) and lookup each state
individually.

Hi woodfam7,

I have located the largest lake in each of the states.

However, in regard to the largest city in land area for each state, I
have only been able to find a database with approximately 260
metroplitan areas in the United States ranked by area and listed in
alphabetical order. This is taken from the State and Metropolitan Area
Data Book 1997-98.
I could extract for each state, the largest city, if available, from the Data Book.

Please let me know how you would like me to proceed.

Regards,
rainbow~

If the list of ~260 metroplitan areas includes one from every state
and is in land area, the Data Book would be fine. I do need the
largest city in each state.

Is there a newer Data Book than 6 years old, perhaps one based upon
the 2000 census? I'm not so confident a 6-year old source is valid for
this data.

Hi woodfam7,

I haven't been able to locate a newer edition of the Data Book. And
until I go through the list of cities, I cannot be sure there will be
one for every state.

Maybe another researcher will have better luck.

The largest city in area in the USA is Jacksonville, FL. This was
achieved by merging the city and county (Duval) boundaries in the
1960s. The largest city in the world in area is Brisbane, Australia.
