What kind of report are you looking for, a description of the "How to"
or something related to the pros and cons of doing that?

Hi,

Step by step instructions for this can be found on the Microsoft website here:

http://www.microsoft.com/windows2000/migrate/unix/unixoracle.asp

Also on that page are supporting documents on other areas typically
affected by such a move and how to get customized Unix type websites
to change over to a MS based system. It is an extensive read and
covers your word amount in great detail.

Other resources for this type of change over, and possible side effects are

SQL Server Worldwide User Group
http://www.sswug.org

They have articles on both types, as well as others, with hints and
help files and moving, combining, and running in tandem.

The Oracle FAQ: comp.database.orace.server archive
http://www.orafaq.net/archive/comp.databases.oracle.server/2001/10/19/

Has several postings showing examples of table changes and sql
statements which need to be addressed when moving from one of these to
the other.

The Oracle Migration Workbench for MS SQL Server and Sybase Adaptive
Server Reference Guide
http://otn.oracle.com/docs/tech/migration/workbench/doc_library/sqlserver/reference.pdf

Basically just as it says, a reference Guide with differences and
translations for adapting existing tables in one database to the other
database. Focus is mainly for the other way around (MS to Oracle), but
a very good gathering of easy to look up information either way.

Where MS is going with SQL Server is toward a OS system which has the
database integrated, which may or may not affect your project. This is
not really a new idea, the IBM AS/400 is exactly this setup, and is
very successful, and stable, but you may find an article on this
interesting, and at the ?heads up? should help with the decision
process.

Universal data, vs. Universal Database
http://www.sqlmag.com/Articles/Index.cfm?ArticleID=5232

Really, your best resource of all of these is the first one, there are
ten full articles and references there which address this move
directly, and at least 20 other full length supporting articles if you
need more in depth knowledge in particular areas.

Thanks, and if you need something else, just use the Request
Clarification button there at the top of the page, and I?ll look into
it further for you.

Hi,

Your question appeared to ask for a report, which is what I found for
you. Since this is not what you asked for, I'll gladly create a report
for you, using these resources, and my own experience.

The topic is rather large, and wide however, and 2000 words will not
cover an extensive part of this subject. If you can tell me a little
more about the "reason behind the move" such as, website is changing,
or office system is changing, or an internal system change to new OS
(Solaris to MS 2000 for instance) I can focus the report to suit your
needs better.

In the future, it would be better not to rate a question until the
researcher has been able to respond to your request, as all
researchers are more than willing to make sure your answer suits your
needs.

Thanks,

Hi,

I forgot you had that deadline on this answer for Sunday, I remembered
this morning, far from home and my referance notes. If you can take it
by Tuesday evening, I have time to work on it in the morning, and then
later in the afternoon. It shouldn't take much longer than that, but
I'll make sure it is done before the early hours of Wednesday. If you
are okay with that, then do nothing and I'll get this done for you. If
you are not, then post a clarification, and I'll see that this answer
is removed.

Really do appologize. I have the notes and outline done now, it is
just a matter of putting the words in the processor.

thanks,

I've tried to cover most of the glaring problems and point a few
alternative solutions. The size of this report is hardly enough to
encompass the real breath of the problems conversions like this face.
The first link I gave you above should be referred to often, as well
as the other resources I linked to with my first answer. As they say,
the devil is in the details.

I've made this into a Word Document, you can download this from :

http://68.15.21.151/uploads/researchers/database.doc

If you don't have word, you can also get this as a PDF file from :
http://68.15.21.151/uploads/researchers/database.pdf

Thanks, good luck, and if you need anything clarified with this
report, please let me know.
