"Treadmills and elliptical trainers rank as two of the most popular
machines in gyms today, but which one offers better results? According
to Thomas Altena, professor of nutritional sciences and exercise
physiologist at the University of Missouri-Columbia, the difference
between the two is minimal.
When Altena measured oxygen retention, lactic acid build-up, heart
rate and perceived exertion, he discovered slight differences. "In
this study, the physiological responses associated with elliptical
exercise were nearly identical to treadmill exercise," Altena says.
In two sessions, subjects exercised on each machine at the same
intensity in terms of oxygen consumption and calories burned. On a
rating scale from 6 to 20 (6 being at rest and 20 being at maximal
effort), the sample group rated 13.42 on the elliptical trainer and
12.32 on the treadmill.
"In light of the small statistical differences, a practical
application of this research would state that both exercise machines
are effective for increasing the amount of calories burned and
producing cardiorespiratory, health and training benefits," concludes
Altena."

The number of calories you burn while exercising is based on a number
of factors including the intensity and duration of exercise, the
method of exercise (treadmill vs. elliptical), your gender and your
normal metabolism. The reason you seem to burn more calories on the
elliptical machine may be probably related to the fact that that
particular exercise is more intense than your exercise on the
treadmill.
Think about how hard you feel you're exercising on the elliptical and
then compare that to how hard you feel you're working when you walk on
the treadmill. My guess is that you work harder on the elliptical
because, even at its lowest level, it is more difficult than the level
of walking you do. If you elevated the intensity of your walking to
the intensity you experience on the elliptical, you would burn just as
many, if not more, calories. It's all about the amount of effort you
put into the exercise."

2 Minutes: Lower ramps and resistance to comfortable level. PE=5
6 minutes: Set ramps and resistance to medium and go backwards. PE=5-6
