In an online article from CNN found at
www.cnn.com/2003/SHOWBIZ/Movies/06/29/hepburn.obit/, Katherine Hepburn
is quoted as saying, "I often wonder whether men and women really suit
each other. Perhaps they should live next door and just visit now and
then." Where, when, and to whom did she say this? Was it in an
interview, a movie, or somewhere else? Please Help! |

My goodness. This quote is all over the Web, and everyone is
attributing it to Kate Hepburn, but nobody seems to be very specific!
Here is an excerpt from a book about the great love stories of modern
times. In a chapter about Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn, this
passage appears:
"I have always thought that marriage was a funny sort of institution,"
she [Katharine Hepburn] explained. "Sometimes I wonder if men and
women really suit each other at all. It's inevitable that they should
come together now and again, but how well suited are they to living in
the same house? Perhaps they should live next door and visit every now
and then."
That's the most complete version of the quote that I have seen. If
information about the book in which the quote above may be found would
be a satisfactory answer to your question, please let me know.

Please forgive the delay. Hectic life. I do think the quote you have
is what I'm looking for. If the book it comes from has the exact
place (interview or what?), time (year), and person (who did she say
this to?), then I'd say you've got the answer. As it stands, your
info is the closest I've come to an answer.
I look forward to hearing from you.

Hi questions7,
Not to butt in here on Pink's good work, but I have found reference to
a magazine source for your quote just as you wrote it (which is likely
just a shortened version of the one Pink found) All I have is the
title of a well-known magazine and year, no hint as to context. The
book I found it in, however, is a credible reference.
I guess which one came first would be relevant if we are looking for
the ultimate source ...my reference says 1980.
How would you like to proceed?

Sorry, but the source I mentioned does not give the additional info
that you need (exact place, time, and person). I haven't been able to
find any version of the quote that is that specific.

Hi questions7,
I see that your question expires tomorrow. Have you decided whether or
not you'd like me to post the information I have as an answer? After
tomorrow it will be too late.
As I said, I have the year (1980) and the name of the magazine where
the quote apparently appeared first. According to the author of the
book I would be referencing in my answer, "In order to assure myself
and guarantee you of accuracy, I have examined the original source of
almost every quotation."
Please let me know if you'd like my answer posted.

Hi K,
Yes, I'd very much like for you to post the answer. Thank you for
reminding me about the expiration! If you have the full quote, I
think I'm done. If not, I'm willing to pay pinkfreud 30.00 as well
for that.
Congratulations and thanks again,
