What percentage of 26 month old toddlers can identify 8 basic shapes,
i.e., point to the cirlce, point to the square, point to the triangle

karen30115 - hi.  Very interesting question and thanks for submitting it.

I can give you two data points - both my children who have reached
that age could do that and more...but of course that's not what you
are looking for :-)

Seriously - most likely, no one has researched that exact question -
i.e. 8 shapes at 26 months of age - what alernative research would
suffice?

I guess the best variation that would still be of value would be this:
at what age can 50% of children identify 8 shapes from a picture?

My twin dughters who are no geniuses could identify squares, circles,
triangles, rectangles, diamonds, crescents, semi-circles and stars
before the age of two. By two and a half they could identify quite a
few more shapes.
