I am looking for individual health insurance for my son and I. He has
ADHD and has to be on medication and see a psychologist once a week.
The plans that I have come across don't offer coverage for this or his
meds. They also don't cover anything for me (birth control, etc.),
except 4 doctor visits a year for each of us. I've kept this plan
mainly for catastrophic reasons. I need a better plan that will cover
him and I more like group coverage would. Does anyone know of any
plans out there for these things that won't cost me $500 a month?

Violet,

You need to tell me what state and county you are in first as
individual health plans vary by state and even, in some cases, county.
Are you currently working? Do you want a PPO, HMO, or indemnity plan?
Can I assume that because you are looking for individual plans that
you are not employed?

In general, you can lower your premium by electing to have a higher
deductible and co-pay. PPOs and HMOs also tend to be cheaper than
indemnity plans.

Be warned though - unless their is legislation in your state or unless
you can get the insurance company to make an exception, you may find
your son's ADHD considered a pre-existing condition. This will leave
you footing the bill for most of his treatment. It is very important
that you seek as much help as possible from Medicaid in your state.

Lastly, your birth control pills may be cheaper if you find a women's
health clinic run by the state in your area. They may offer low-cost
or free pills provided you meet certain income or other criteria.
