Dear researchers

I have an electric oster clipper to shave hair (for people) and I
recently tried shaving my dog (medium hair) but her fur matted up
inside the clippers after a while. (Her fur is very very fine, a lot
like the fur on my cats)

I can take my clippers apart and clean out the fur, but it doesn't
seem to shave for more than 5 minutes at a time before freezing up.

Questions:

Are the pet clippers significantly different from human clippers (I've
never gone to a professional groomer, nor do I wish to start)?

If they aren't, what can I do when shaving to prevent the clipper from
freezing up (the vibrating part stops vibrating).

If they are different, what should I look for when purchasing clippers?

Can you recommend two specific clippers (new)?

Personal experience is acceptable.

Thank you!

Hi banchan,

When grooming your dog it's best to use Dog Clippers. Human clippers
will get too hot and also can irritate your dogs' skin.

"I was wondering what a good grooming tool would be. I was thinking an
electric would be easier, but I don't know. Can you use human electric
clippers?
How much should I spend?

using human clippers is not advised, reason is they get hot and you
can irritate your dogs skin when clipping them."

4. CLIPPERS

"No matter how we'd want to, human hair-clippers don't fit. So get a
dog clipper. I should note Oster and Mozer among the most well-known
producers of such goods.

Clippers are divided onto amateur and professional ones. The latter is
more durable, works longer without overheat and is more expensive. A
single professional clipper is used on dozens and hundreds of dogs a
year, while an amateur one is applied to one or two coats and is
alright during many years. As a rule, professional clippers are
supplied with electric motor and reducer, whilst amateur clipper has a
vibration gear. One more difference: professional clippers are usually
multi-nozzle, while with amateur blades are fastened firmly. Some of
the latter type are provided with a device that allows modifying the
length of hair to be left on body up to 0.5 - 3 mm. To increase this
range one may use a set of plastic nozzles with which up to 15 cm of
hair can be left on skin.

Proper maintenance makes for the nozzles life time. If you don't have
a special liquid, wipe nozzles with alcohol after work and lubricate
with oil (e.g. for sewing-machine) before work. Choose a better
quality oil."

"As for your clippers, human clippers aren't designed to clip through dog fur."

[edit]

"The more expensive clipper is made with a better, faster motor and
will run cooler for a longer period of time than a cheap clipper. It
also has more versatility as far as blade options. A cheap clipper
would work well on a dog with clean, mat-free fur, but not on a
filthy, matted coat. An expensive clipper will cut through the worst
mess imaginable. To make a long story short, when it comes to
clippers, you get what you pay for."

"Keep in mind people clippers are probably not designed to do the long
hard work that an animal clipper has to do."

"What to look for when purchasing clippers:

If you plan to trim the hair on your dog's coat, using the right tools
will make all the difference in achieving the look you want.

Clippers
A clipper has a large variety of blades that can be changed easily and
quickly. If you use a clipper on your dog, you should also use a spray
product used to cool and lubricate the snap-on blades. While using the
clipper, frequently spray this product on the blades to control heat
build-up and help prevent clipper burn. This product can also be used
on scissor blades to help prevent rusting and keep the blades clean.

Blades
All snap-on blades have the number of the blade stamped on it. The
higher the number, the closer the cut. To keep your blades in top
shape, use a blade wash solution. When a blade is new, it must be
attached to the clipper and immersed in this solution. Running the
clipper for about one minute will remove the protective coating from
the blade. After that, the blades should be run in this solution after
every grooming session to clean them and to remove hair and dirt.
Follow this up with a spray of lubricant.

Snap-on Combs
These combs, when snapped onto your clipper, greatly reduce clipping
and scissoring time. They allow you to leave the coat longer while
using clippers, giving the coat a more scissored look than a clipped
look."

Because of the variance in dog breed types of fur I recommend you
first contact Pet Suppliers and ask for their recommendations on
clippers and blades.
