donphiltrodt- I'm just writing to let you know I haven't abandoned you or given up on this. I don't actually have a windows 98 CD, nor a floppy drive to boot from, and it's taken me the past few days to cobble together the pieces that I do have into a working win98 installation. I have the actual install files for win98, so the end product will be indistinguishable from a "proper" win98 install (which is to say, the instructions I eventually come up with for you will be based on "real" windows). I finally got the system to boot properly, and Windows is installing as I type this. If things continue to be this difficult it could take a while to answer your question, but I'm hoping that this was the big hurdle and I'll be able to progress rapidly from here on out. -Haversian |

Sigh. While I applaud your effort, I wish you would've told me you didn't even OWN the OS I was asking about. I believe you should've made that clear at the very outset! The results of not disclosing that to me are: a) I've been floating, waiting on hold with no end point, b) you've been investing time (I assume), hoping that you can get it done before I give up, not knowing #1) how long it's going to take you or #2) how long I'm willing to wait. Therefore, you've created a very frustrating situation: I'm caught between a) waiting indefinitely, ultimately settling for a SLOW answer and b) giving up, possibly mere hours before you were to have submitted an answer, causing me, again, to settle for SLOW answer. This is why I believe it was inconsiderate to not disclose that you didn't even own the required OS. I do, however, appreciate the lengths to which you (I assume -- I haven't heard from you) are going. Thank you for whatever work you've put into this, even though I have no idea how much that is, or when you expect to be done. (?!) The question will be reposted Sunday at 6PM EST. |

I appologize for the confusion, and for any hold-up it's causing on your end. Given that you didn't mention any time sensitivity in your question, and my initial clarification request mentioning "...and finding Win95 or 98 shouldn't be too hard.", I assumed it was clear what was going on. I don't have a win98 disc, though I do have the files on it (a disk backup made before I knew how to do it properly). Consequently, I had a hard time making a bootable CD, and had to improvise, though that's all behind me now. If a quick answer is important to you, then by all means add a clarification to this question saying that you're opening it to all Google Answerers (though naturally some will be put off by the question's title), or close this question entirely and open up another one without the specific request for my help in the title. Had I understood the time pressure you were under, I would have handled this differently. I appologize for my error and hope that, whichever approach you choose to take, you're happy with the answer you ultimately receive, whether I am the one to provide it or not. Have a good evening, -Haversian |
