Question ID: 303960
I am looking for a subscription service that can provide me, either by
means of log-in to an online database or regular e-mails, timely news
of RELOCATING senior executives, e.g., "Bill Jones, SVP of Coyote
Sales at the ACME Corporation, relocates from New York to Phoenix
corporate office to be closer to key sales groups."

A similar service that provides this sort of news for completed merger
and acquisition activity is FactSet Mergerstat's Flashwire service,
about which you can find more information at
http://www.mergerstat.com/flashwire/login.asp. This service provides,
either by e-mail or by login to their database, information on all
recent merger and acquisition activity.

ALTERNATE ANSWER:

Prove the negative, that is, that such a service does not exist. If
you prove the negative, I will tip $50. I need to either answer the
question or show that it cannot be answered.

Hi,logicalboyla-ga,

Are you looking specifically for news pertaining to the relocation of
Senior Executives "within the same company" as per your example, or
for relocation(transfer)from one company to another as well? (Joe
Smith of xyz has relocated to work for msb)

After several hours of searching, I have found only one regularly
updated website that profiles CIO relocations to "different" companies
(free access). Other than that, I have found nothing promising for
other types of Senior Executives that is devoted exclusively to
relocation.

* However, I am a bit unsure how a researcher could "prove" a
negative, other than searching and saying they have not found
anything. Is that proof?

Can you think of any other variations on the type of service you are
pursuing that might be acceptable. Would a directory with updated
contact information for corporate relocation executives serve any
useful pupose? Since I am not sure if you want this for marketing
purposes or general information, I do not know if anything like this
would suffice.

I have a few emails out and will make a few phone calls tomorrow.

I look foward to your response.

Sorry...one more question. Are you looking for US info only, or worldwide?

Hello, logicalboyla-ga!

After extensive searching, I am quite confident that a comprehensive,
timely news service which profiles executive job relocations or
transfers, either within or between companies, does not exist. While
there are many news sources, including newspapers and magazines, that
provide snippets of information concerning executive changes, they are
not as comprehensive as you desire.

One of the reasons that it is relativley easy for a company like
Mergerstat to provide timely information regarding mergers and
acquisitions is due to the SEC filing requirement for public
companies.

On the other hand, executive relocations, career changes or
retirements do not need to be publicized in the same manner. While an
individual company may issue a press release concerning executive
changes to it's shareholders or the press, there is no requirement to
publicize such information.

An individual or company could certainly create their own list or
news service profiling CEO or executive changes by deciding on
companies of interest and accessing the company websites for the
latest press releases.

Now....can I be 100% sure that no such news service exists? No!

Can I be reasonably sure? Yes!

What steps did I follow to come to my conclusion?

I started my research with a host of search terms that you can see
below under my search strategy. The majority of hits using the term
"relocation" were for executive relocation companies. The other search
strategies turned up nothing in the way of email or subscriber news
services. I then searched relevant magazines and newspapers which have
occasional profiles of executive job changes to see if they offered an
alert service. Again, I came up empty-handed.

I consulted at length with a research librarian at a very large and
respectable academic institution in case she had knowledge of or
access to information I could not find. She was unable to any evidence
of a new service, either.

I contacted a large company involved in Corporate Relocation
associated with numerous pertinent publications to find out if they
could direct me to a news service similar to your specifications.

Their reply:

"Actually we do not always hear about corporate relocations of Senior
Executives, but you can check in our magazine, National Relocation &
Real Estate magazine. We have Personnel notes in the front of the
magazine where things like that are announced...or you can check our
web site periodically."

The magazine is titled "National Relocation & REAL ESTATE Magazine"
and is available on the following website:
http://www.rismedia.com/magazine/homepage.html

Rismedia also publishes the "Corporate Relocation Register" which is
an "online, relocation-specific, resource publication and database
that identifies thousands of executive contacts at approximately 5,000
US corporations. In most cases it identifies the company's relocation
program and relocation services offered, the number of executive
relocations (both domestic and international) and the percentage of
homeowners vs. renters relocated annually.
http://www.corporateregisterusa.com/about.html

(I don't know if this resource would serve any useful purpose for you
since I don't know your reasons for wanting relocations information)

The following online resources contain some timely updates concerning
CIO's and CEO's but they are limited in scope and usually involve
relocation to different companies or new hires:

CIO Magazine
==============
The magazine has a section titled "Movers and Shakers" that profiles
CIO career changes and relocations, but I am not sure how often the
column appears.

You can apply for updates on CIO Movers and Shakers on the following page:

Chief Executive Magazine
=======================
The magazine has a section on CEO Succession, but these are primarily
career moves to other companies.

The following article contains reference to CEO tracking reports by
Challenger, Gray and Christmas concerning executive layoffs, but I
could find nothing about the reports on their website. However, it may
be worth a call if you would like to obtain them.

"CEOs leave in 'departure spree'." Silicon Valley/San Jose Business
Journal. (Jan 2003)

that attract attention regionally and nationally, but does not have a
threshold size."

I thought I hit pay dirt with CEOTrack, but it does not appear to have
any timely updates on Executive Relocations or career changes of the
type you are describing.
http://www.ceotrak.com/news_information.asp

However, according to the following article, CEOTrack does offer a
quarterly tracking system concerning information "about CEO's", though
not relocations, specifically.

BizJournal online
==================
You can request email updates on industries of interest, though that
will include a lot of news apart from CEO relocations and transfers.

You can perform a daily search using the term "CEO" to get timely news
which may or may not be pertinent. Obviously, you will have to sift
through the results.

Google news

www.google.com (Click on News)

You can receive daily email alerts from Google news though it may be
difficult to pinpoint the exact search terms to bring you the specific
news you want.

Different combinations of headlines bring up various current headlines.

The following database reports timely "personnel changes" in the
financial industry:

the top 500 largest credit unions and of the top 50 international

"The Bank Director database is kept current mainly by constant contact

To sum it up....

While there are numerous magazines and newspapers that provide
information on corporate executive transfers and relocations, I have
located no news service that provides timely news of the type you
require.

That is not to say there is not such a service
hidden....somewhere....beyond the reach of my extensive search.

However, if one does exist, attempts should be made to make it
readily accessible to the public. I am sure it would be well-used!

I hope this information proves helpful to you!

Sincerely,

umiat-ga

Hello, logicalboyla-ga,

I am just wondering if you have had an opportunity to preview my
answer. In your original question, you stated "Prove the negative,
that is, that such a service does not exist. If you prove the
negative, I will tip $50. I need to either answer the question or
show that it cannot be answered."

Do you feel that I sufficiently answered this question for you? Are
you content that no such comprehensive service detailing Executive
Relocations exists?

So sorry. Not ignoring you at all and I am pretty sure you have met
the need to prove a negative (I hated those problems in Symbolic Logic
class in college and while it's possible in symbolic logic, it's
generally not possible outside of it), but the opinion that really
counts is my internal corporate customer's. I haven't heard from him
yet either way (which should mean he's satisfied too) but I want to
give him until the end of this week to raise any further questions
before I close the question and give the promised tip.

No problem! Thanks for your reply.
logicalboyla-ga rated this answer:5 out of 5 stars and gave an additional tip of: $50.00
Thanks for your patience. Your answer satisfied me in so far as it
was possible to prove this negative and gave me some assistance in
closing the question in house.
