I use "Insert Caption" a lot in MS Word (2000), so that tables and
figures in what I write are auto-numbered.

Every time I want to cross-reference a figure or table, it defaults to
"Entire Caption" rather than "Only label and number". Is there any
way to make the default "Only label and number"?

Thanks.

This question is priced low, because someone might know the answer,
and not have to search for it. No need for a search strategy.

Hmm... maybe this was harder than I thought. I upped the price a bit.

Can you adjust the normal.dot file in office directory as this is the
defaul setting file that is loaded each time a word function is
loaded....

Nice idea, but there's no obvious way to do it - it's not a thing
that's in the document.
