I want to find the origin and author of the following historical quote: 'Good government flourishes in the darkness'. Is there a particularly good quote finder or citation index online? Any other quotes (with their authors) relating to the secretive or mysterious nature of good government or statescraft would be useful too. |

Hello Rob, I have come up empty-handed thus far. My first guess was Machiavelli. Your quotation is certainly compatible with his view of governance. But thus far I have not been able to pin it down to him. I also consulted--and can recommend to you--these sites for quotation searching: www.bartleby.com and www.quotationspage.com scribe_ga |

His pro-appeasement colleague Rab Butler voiced elite opinion thus: "Good government flourishes in the dark." http://www.jpost.com/Editions/2000/12/26/Books/Books.18029.html Bowler-ga |
