Does "greylite insulite sheathing" a product manufactured in the 50's
and 60's, possibly Johns-Manville or a similar type company, contain
asbestos?

Hello Joed,
Just to clarify, would Greylite be the brand name?

Clarification of Question by joed-ga on 06 Feb 2004 14:30 PST
Greylite could be the brand name. I just assumed that it was a product
name. These are lighweight 4'x 8' sheets 1/2 inch thick of a what seem
to be made up of compressed fibers and have the words greylite
insulite sheathing stamped all over them. They were installed on the
interior side of a ceiling (as opposed to a roof) sometime in the 50's
or 60's. The product seems to have disappeared from the face of the
earth at this point in time, hence my cause for concern.

joed-ga:

Not sure if this helps or hinders, but here is a definition of 'insulite':

http://www.thefreedictionary.com/Insulite

In´su`lite
n. 1. (Elec.) An insulating material, usually some variety of
compressed cellulose, made of sawdust, paper pulp, cotton waste, etc.

It helps, especially since the word "asbestos is not in there. I
never occurred to me that "insulite" was a real word. I thought it
was some sort of a product name. Thanks. Joed

Hello joed-ga,

You have nothing to fear from the ?greylite insulite sheathing? in
your ceiling. Various forms of ?insulate? have been around for almost
100 years and I?ve identified several current manufacturers. The term
?insulite? seems to have evolved into a generic term (like Kleenex or
Xerox) although there are several references to it being trademarked
or registered. There is some discussion of litigation between the
Insulite Company and Masonite Corporation in a 1942 Supreme Court case
United States vs. Masonite Corporation. Insulite products through the
years have had various compositions all of which had highly heatproof
qualities. None of them are hazardous. I?ve included links to several
of these.

I?ve included a section on historical references to insulite as well
as to a variety of entirely different products that also use this
name.

I have not been able to find any reference to ?greylite? as a company
name. This term is currently used to describe a specific type of
industrial glass.

I hope you can put your mind at rest about the safety of the insulite
you?ve found. Please don?t hesitate to ask for clarification on any of
this.

Wishing you well.

Question: Are all fire resistant files alike?

One of the biggest differences in a Schwab file compared to others is
Insulite?, the most effective insulation in the industry. Insulite
provides maximum protection with thinner walls and less weight than
competitors' insulation. Because Insulite does not contain free water
it will not dry out and lose its ability to provide fire protection
over a period of time as compared to competitor?s files utilizing
gypsum as an insulating material. Gypsum being the same material as
that used in drywall, makes it vulnerable to water and decomposition.

Insulite Micro

Insulite Micro is made of micro-thin fibres, that are finer than a
filament of silk. Through a pattern of micro fine fibres, which create
many microscopic air pockets, this insulation has a very high weight
to warmth ration, protecting you from the cold. With its excellent
draping qualities it complements the modern fibrics used in the outer
shell and inner lining of the sleeping bag, to give an un rivalled
snugness. The microfilament yarns are treated to make them
non-allergenic, durable, and easily cleaned.

Insulite
A specially developed filling by Vango, it traps more air to provide
up to 20% more warmth than solid fibre insulation. Through their
hollow, siliconised and spiralled fibres it retains insulative quality
even when wet, is easy care, durable, machine washable and
non-allergenic. It maintains shape and insulative qualities even after
repeated cleaning.
