I have part of a poem text or it could be an excerpt from a novel. I
need author, title and where I can find it. The excerpt is as
follows: "I battled against the wind today in a lonely moorland place.
Angerly over the hills it drove arrows of rain into my face like a
scourage of grace. Savage and stern were the moors today and my fight
was nearly vain. Only the whip of the wind in my face and the
stinging steel of the rain. But I'll go again."

Hello jimb-ga,

Can you provide any additional context for this text? Where did you
come across it? Any idea of the age or period of the text? How is it
that you're not sure if it's a poem or novel?

Any additional information you could provide would be help in
(possibly) tracking down the original source of the text.

Thanks.

Thank you for helping. To answer your questions, there is no more
context. I got this excerpt from my Aunt who writes books or use to.
Because of her age, she cannot remember where she saw this poem or
shall we say part of a poem. She was an English teacher in her day.
Her teachings were centered around the Bronte era but I can't find
anything from any of the Brontes which even comes close. Grangers
doesn't have anything. Five librarians can't find this. That's why
I'm wondering if perhaps this was an exerpt from a novel. This wasn't
made up. My Aunt read this somewhere, and there's the problem.

This is a tough one. I've been looking through a goodly number of
literature and poetry databases, but thus far, no luck.

I'll keep on searching, but I'm also going to unlock this question in
case another researcher can offer some information on your aunt's
elusive poem.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR EFFORTS. YES, PLEASE KEEP TRYING. I KNOW FOR A
FACT THAT THIS POEM(WHATEVER) EXISTS. THERE IS NO QUESTION, HOWEVER I
HAVE TRIED EVERYTHING I CAN THINK OF. THAT'S WHY I THOUGHT IT MIGHT
BE AN EXCERPT FROM A NOVEL OR PREFACE FROM SOME BOOK, ETC... MY AUNT
CAN'T REMEMBER WHERE SHE READ THIS OR SAW THIS POEM BUT I'M BEYOND
POSITIVE THAT SHE DID READ IT SOMEWHERE.

I just have a few very basic ideas on this, or what it could possibly
have come from. Mind you I'm no expert, but judging from the
phrasing, it reminds me of some epic poetry from the early Medieval
Period, as well as some songs of the time. Have you considered that
it could be a lyric, and not a poem or prose? Or, that it may have
originally been written in some language other than English or even an
early form of English and simply translated at a later date? No idea
if that will help, but I hope it does. Best of luck to all involved.

I contacted a poetry organization in Scotland - the moorland thing
making me wonder if it might signify a location - and they also have
never heard of this text. The librarian said she was thinking that it
might be by an obscure poet from either the Victorian era or the early
1900's. She has posted it on their office "lost text" board, and told
me that if, through their research, they ever come across it, she will
advise me. If I do hear from her, I will be sure to post it.

The phrase reminds me of some of Samuel Becketts work. It's probably
not Beckett, though, but who knows...

Hi,

I've also read this quote, so I know that it exists--you aren't crazy.
I'll keep turning it over in my mind & try my best to remember where I
saw it.
