of the computer industry.  Can you help?

1.	Statistics regarding how much money or percentage of budget
Microsoft spends on improving its Windows operating system.
2.	Statistics on the growth of use of non PC-dependent information
storage devices (e.g., memory sticks, USB keychain drives, et al)
3.	Statistics on the growing acceptance of open source applications,

According to Sony shipments of memory sticks were 9 million units to
the end of March 2001. Shipments to the end of March 2003 were 39
million units. It forecasts shipment of 75 million by the end of 2004,
130 million by the end of March 2005 and 210 million by the end of
March 2006.

About 60 percent of current sales of cards are for digital cameras and
30 percent for PC and peripheral use, including digital music players.
 The remaining 10 percent are used in cellular telephones, and Sony
thinks this will rise between 20 percent and 25 percent in the future
on the back of increased use with cellular handsets. 3G applications
are predicted to give a boost in sales in 2006 and 2007.

A survey of 500 North American IT users by SG Cowen found that 80
percent of respondents were currently using Linux and over half
planned to increase their use of the system in the next two years. The
main reasons for turning toward Linux were reliability, scalability,
and lower cost. Reasons for not deploying Linux centered around
concerns regarding application availability and service and support.

Shared Source & Open Source Research Project. The Shared Source
project was developed to provide a greater understanding of how key
audiences perceive Open Source, Linux, Shared Source, and the GPL and

The survey of IT professionals was carried out in U.S. Brazil, France,
Germany, Sweden and Japan in 2001.

Some of the findings.
81% of respondents are familiar with OSS and 77% with Linux.
Linux favorability amongst Linux familiar was 86%. 
The survey also shows the familiarity in each geographical region.
Respondents found the most compelling reason to support OSS was that
it offer a low total cost of ownership (40%) and 34% because it offers
an alternative to Microsoft.
Only 24% of respondents were interested in deploying Linux in their
business. There was however greater interest in Germany (50%) and
Japan (37%).

A survey of IT professionals by intenet.com Corp carried out in 2001,
found that nearly 80 percent of current Linux users value the
operating system for its superior, more stable performance.

The survey found that Red Hat is the most well known -- familiar to 79
