Hi.

I can give you the number of radio stations in the United states and
Canada separated by country, but the second part of your question is
vague.

How do you define 'listeners'? I've located a statistic of the total
number of Americans who listen to the radio at least once per week.
Would that be acceptable?

Yes that would be acceptable. Thanks.

Hello.

There are about 13,000 radio stations in the U.S. and 700 in Canada.

sources:

Associated Press, 1/6/04:
"Only about 300 of the United States' 13,000 radio stations have
become licensed for digital"
http://www.macon.com/mld/macon/business/technology/7646329.htm

The Guardian, March 4, 2003:
"You might more pertinently wonder how you govern a country like the
US that has 13,000 radio stations.
http://www.guardian.co.uk/comment/story/0,3604,906875,00.html

The Globe and Mail, December 4, 2003:
"..it's hard to get the 700 radio stations in Canada and the 13,000 in
the United States to recognize the severity of the problem"

------

Approximately 223 million Americans listen to the radio at least once a week.

Salt Lake Tribune, March 2, 2003
"A century after its birth, radio remains an enormously popular mass
medium. In an average week, radio reaches 223 million people, or 94
percent of all Americans aged 12 or older. "
http://www.sltrib.com/2003/Mar/03022003/utah/34326.asp

As for how much they listen, Barron's reports that the average
American adult listen to two hours of radio per day.

'From Barron's Online: "On a typical day, America's 200 million adults
listen to the radio for at least two hours, mostly in their
cars.Image: Satellite radio artwork from Barron's'

search strategy:
"united states * radio stations"
u.s., "has * radio stations"
"radio stations in canada"
"million * listen to the radio"

I hope this helps.
