Good morning, john123,

I'm pretty sure I've found your song. It was just a matter of slightly
re-arranging the clue you provided for us. It has been recorded many
times by many artists, including Harry Belafonte, Bob Dylan, Jim
Croce, Sammy Davis Jr, Neil Diamond, Jerry Jeff Walker, Nancy Wilson,
The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, and Cyndee Peters.

The song is called Mr Bojangles and was written and performed by Jerry
Jeff Walker. It can be found on his 1968 album by the same name:
1968 Mr. Bojangles (Atco/Rhino CD)
LP, ATCO - SD33-259
LP, Bainbridge BT6222 (re-release)
CD, ATCO/RHINO - R2 71518

These are the lyrics as performed by the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band.
(Lyrics vary slightly from one performer to the next.)

Mr. Bojangles
( Nitty Gritty Dirt Band )

I knew a man Bojangles and he danced for you in worn out shoes
With silver hair, a ragged shirt and baggy pants, the old soft shoe
He jumped so high, he jumped so high,
Then he lightly touched down

I met him in a cell in New Orleans, I was - down and out
He looked at me to be the eyes of age as he spoke right out
He talked of life, he talked of life, he laughed, slapped his leg a step

Mr. Bojangles, Mr. Bojangles
Mr. Bojangles, dance!

He said his name, Bojangles, then he danced a lick across the cell
He grabbed his pants a better stance, oh, he jumped up high,
Then he clicked his heels
He let go a laugh, he let go a laugh,
Shook back his clothes all around

Mr. Bojangles, Mr. Bojangles
Mr. Bojangles, dance!

He danced for throws at minstrel shows and county fairs
Through out the south
He spoke with tears of fifteen years how his dog and him
Had traveled about
His dog up and died, he up and died, after twenty years he still grieves

He said I dance now at every chance in honky tonks
For drink and tips
But most of the time I spend behind these county bars
'Cause I drinks a bit'
He shook his head and as he shook his head
I heard someone ask him `Please'
Please ..........

Mr. Bojangles, Mr. Bojangles
Mr. Bojangles, dance!

Mr. Bojangles, Mr. Bojangles
Mr. Bojangles, dance!

You can listen to the song as performed by Robbie Williams at
http://www.bun.ru/mp3/eng/R/Robbie_Williams/Mr_Bojangles.shtml

Just click on the speaker icon to the right of Robbie Williams' name
to load it and listen. The file goes into your temporary file and is
in RealOne Player format. To save it to a file of your own choosing,
right click the icon and direct it accordingly.

To be honest, I don't think Mr. Williams' version is nearly as good as
others I've heard. You might want to check out a music store for Sammy
Davis Jr's or Bob Dylan's interpretations.

Thanks for the question and I hope you enjoy the song!

Regards,
revbrenda

In case you are interested in information about the historical figure
on which the song "Mr. Bojangles" was based, here is a link to a brief
biography of Bill "Bojangles" Robinson:

In spite of Sammy Davis Jr.'s and other's belief, this song is not
about Bill Robinson. Bill Robinson was never a street singer/dancer
living on handouts. This song was based on an entirely different
person.
