Just a random data-point for you:

The elementary students I teach computer skills to have all raised
their reading scores by using a computer based tutoring program. It
holds their attention better and for longer than the old workbook
based assessments.

I am in the tenth grade, and the school that i attend has a somewhat
advanced comuter programme. Both the math and science departments
make extensive use of computer learning programs. I like to use paper
rather than a computer. I have no aversion to computers, but I think
that it is simply the fact that no CRT can even aproach the resolution
and ease of use of a pencil and paper (for math) or the extensive
coverage of science textbooks. I like to use handheld calculators for
math, but i prefer to keep track of what im doing in a problem on
paper. In biology class, we are studying DNA at the site
http://www.dnai.org This is THE best learning web site I have EVER
used, but it isstill more difficult thn using a textbook.

My daughter age 17 does her math and science thru the internet AT
school she was behind untill she started doing this, now she is way
ahead, kids just like it better they can relate to it better I think,
what with all the computer and video games they like to play. my son
age 19 would not have graduated with out it, he was a very poor reader
and speller, after playing Everquest for a few years he could type
over 100 words per min and reading comprehention went off the scale,
as well as spelling. A word of warning though on that game, they will
want to do that over EVERYTHING else and STRICT game times must be
inforced Its not called Evercrack for nothing, kids do get addicted
but for spelling, typing and reading, Wow
