Hi, I am putting together a database of colleges, and need to find a
list of US colleges and key statistics for each college. (The
database should be in the public domain and not require me to pay to
use it.)

Ideally, I am looking for much of the info contained on this example
page: http://www.petersons.com/ugchannel/code/InstVC.asp?inunid=9144&sponsor=1.
However, the most critical pieces are: School Name, URL, email
address of Admissions Dept, Majors, Cost, and student population
count.

I have seen the lists at
http://www.mit.edu:8001/people/cdemello/univ.html,
http://www.clas.ufl.edu/CLAS/american-universities.html, and others,
but they are (1) not easily load-able into a database, and (2) missing
lots of additional information I require (email address, phone, ZIP,
etc).

I have also seen the lists at Thomson's, Peterson's, US News, and
Kaplan's college portals, but I believe the data is "owned" by the
respective companies, and not in the public domain.

I believe that I saw some US Dept of Education (or similar) databases
available that may have this info, but I could not find these when I
looked today.

The ideal answer would be a simple CSV file (or similar) with the
required data. Thanks!

uc1bear - I believe I have located the database you recall, it has
several thousand post-secondary schools listed and you can query to
extract basic data - but to extract all of the data you require you
may have to have someone write a script (some pretty talented
researchers here at Google have written such scripts in the past!)

Importantly, all of the variables you describe are included - and more.

Should I post this database as a response?

ragingacademic,

Thanks for your time and research. However, a link to the database
isn't what I need... I need the data itself. Perhaps you can team up
with a programmer to extract it, or look for options to download the
database in its entirety?

Thanks, uc

uc1bear - unfortunately, there is no way for us to team up on a
question. Regardless, however, you'd likely need a couple of hours of
programming time to write something like this so no one would tackle
it for the fee proposed.

How about the following solution -

+ repost the question to my attention with a reduced fee, say $15 -
I'll provide you with the address for the database
+ then, repost the question with a price that may more properly
reflect the amount of time needed to extract this data

thanks,
ragingacademic

ragingacademic,

Can you confirm that the data is 100% public domain and can be used by
me freely for any purpose? Or is a license required? Thanks,

uc

Also, can you confirm that the data includes admission department
email addresses (not phone numbers), as this is our most critical data
element? Thanks,

uc

uc1bear - this is a government site, there is no copyright on the
page, and there are no warnings as to possible use of data. I can't
guarantee anything, but it would seem not to require any permissions.

thanks,
ragingacademic

uc1bear - my apologies, I have just gone through several schools and
they include a Web site address as well as a phone number for
admissions and several other departments - but no email.

Again, my apologies - and best of luck with your search!
