Dear Bugbear,
I have been searching all afternoon for the average minor league
baseball player salary and this is what I have been able to come up
with.
?Minor-league salaries vary widely, from a few hundred dollars a week
at rookie ball to close to $100,000 a season for experienced players
at AAA. Shave declines to discuss his salary, but it?s likely in the
$60,000 range?significantly less than the current big-league minimum
of $200,000.?

Answer:
?I'm not sure there is an average in minor league baseball. I've gone
to some Class A games where one team had players who signed for a 3
million dollar package most of it bonus rather than salary. Other
players on the same team even those considered prospects might sign
for a $1,000 or less bonus and make perhaps $600 a month and expenses.
That same dichotomy holds true in Double A, though the players not
lucky enough to get the seven figure contract is still not getting
rich. In Triple A with many players in their 30's on the roster, there
is more money. Some might make 30-50 thousand for essentially a six
month season with exceptional cases making low six figures.?

Minor League Numbers
by Joe Kuras
2,000 or 350,000?
"The salary of a minor league ballplayer can vary greatly. Had he
begun the year at Triple-A Pawtucket, Boston outfielder Rickey
Henderson would have made $350,000."
(..)
"Salaries are not popular topics of conversations with ballplayers.
They will talk in general terms about how the numbers vary. They may
get paid either monthly or bi-weekly. They may get paid for just the
months they are playing or year-round. But they are reluctant to talk
about any actual figures or salary ranges."
?It?s different. Not everyone gets the same money,? said Santos. ?Some
of the guys that have been around for a couple of years make more than
other guys but we make different kinds of money.?
Salzano was more succinct: ?I don?t think it?s a polite question but
it varies from player to player,? Salzano.

"After staying out of baseball for two years, Sanders got another
chance with the Reds last spring. He agreed to a contract that
included a $300,000 minor league salary that would have increased to
$600,000 if he was called up to the majors. The contract also included
mutual options for $3 million in 2001, $4 million in 2002 and $5
million in 2003."

Unfortunately, average minor league salaries are difficult if not
impossible to pin down. I sent out a few email inquiries to some
people at the Minor League Baseball Association. If they reply I will
post the information for you here.
In any case I hope the information that I was able to uncover is helpful for you.

Dear Bugbear,
I wrote to the Pacific Coast League ( http://pclbaseball.com/contact/
)and they said that this is not an easy question to answer. You have
to consider the average Triple-A team has a salary budget of about
$1MM for all 24 players. That often does not include Major League
players who are re-assigned to Minor League duties although they are
paid their Major League salaries (which, in some cases is well in
excess of $1MM by themselves.)
For the average player who has not played in the Major Leagues and who
is not on the 40-man roster, the norm for a salary ranges from $3,000
- $5,000 per month.
I hope this answers your question.
Sincerely,
Bobbie7
