I recently upgraded from Windows 2000 to Windows XP Pro. I also
upgraded my Easy CD Creator 4 to CD Creator 6, since I received the
message during the Windows upgrade that CD Creator 4 was not
compatible with Windows XP. Until these upgrades my CD-RW was working
fine. Now I can't even see it in My Computer or Windows Explorer. In
Device Manager the CD-RW has a black exclamation point inside a yellow
background. When I right click on the device and go to Properties I
get the following message: ?A driver (service) for this device has
been disabled. An alternate driver may be providing this
functionality. (Code 32)?. I?ve tried uninstalling the driver and
reinstalling a new driver, I?ve tried changing the cable from the IDE
Secondary connection on the motherboard to the drive, I?ve tried
hooking up the drive as a slave to the Primary IDE connection, and
I?ve tried different jumper settings on the drive. Nothing works. Can
someone explain to me what is happening and help me fix the problem.

Reesh,
In the Device Manager, go to your drive, and open up its Properties.
See if under 'device usage' (under 'General' tab) if the drive is
disabled. I just want to see if you can enable it from there.

By the way, what is your CD-RW drive's brand? Perhaps there are
manufacturer-specific notes about the product. Try also a different
IDE cable, in case the cable you are currently using may be faulty.

See if you find the solution in one of these pages from "Easy CD & DVD
Creator 6 Support Notes":

"To Recover Lost CD or DVD Drives ":

I was finally able to fix the problem. It was in fact a software
problem caused by the recent upgrade to Roxio CD & DVD Creator 6. It
seems that this problem is so prevalent that they have various fixes
listed on their website. Although none of the packaged fixes the
listed for downloading worked, they did have a final suggestion to try
if all else failed. It required going into the Windows Registry and
removing a couple of lines, which I did after backing up everything of
value to a couple of ZIP disks and crossing my fingers.

In any event, I appreciate all the helpfull suggestions I got from
Google Answers. I'm not sure who the $5.00 goes to, but whomever
receives it, it was well worth the expense.

If you are unable to get your CD-RW working through software, it is
likely that it is a hardware issue.

A quality burner can easily be had for around $35

go to www.pricewatch.com and navigate to Storage>CD Burners and click
on some of the higher speeds. This will take you to different venders
websites. If this dosn't suit you, you can use froogle
(www.froogle.com), which is actually part of google. Froogle is very
good for finding the real market value of any product.

Richard,

I'm glad to hear that your problem has been resolved!

Regarding the matter of what happens to the five dollars, if you would
like one of the Researchers who assisted you to receive a share of the
$5.00 fee, you need only ask that Researcher to post an official
Answer. The two Researchers who offered suggestions to you were
techtor and livioflores. Only one Researcher can post an Answer, but
you can choose which one, if you like.

Alternatively, you can cancel the question in its current unanswered
state, and you will be billed only the fifty-cent listing fee.

It's entirely up to you.

Best regards,
