Aluminum of various alloys is commonly extruded into tubing or tubes
that are round, square or rectangular in cross-section. Common size
descriptions would be 1 x 2 x 1/8 for a 1 inch by 2 inch tube with a
1/8 inch thick wall. I need one or more suppliers of 2" x 3" by 3/16
inch wall section. This must be a stock item; not special order.
Supplier must be based in or willing to ship small quantities to the
US. 2 x 3 by 1/8" wall and same with 1/4" wall section are common.
Only 2 x 3 with 3/16 inch wall section will work. Most common alloys
are OK. Some are very expensive. Cheaper is better.

Hmmm...it's a tough one, all right!
Do you have any wiggle room at all? I found a 2 x 2 x 3/16.
I'll keep looking for the 2 x 3, but so far, no luck.

Greetings pgruendeman-ga,
This indeed is a difficult search. I have been unable to locate more
than 1 supplier that meets your criteria. The supplier I did find
requires you to fill out an online quote form as a means of contact.
Rather than post this as an answer, I will let you take a look and
decide if it meets your needs.
http://www.argylein.com/cgi-bin/search_dies.pl?words=RECTTUBE
You will see a spec for a rectangular tube with measurements 2" x 3" x .188"
Obviously, 3/16 of an inch is .1875". If you contact them <
http://www.argylein.com/quote.html > and they meet your needs, if you
will post a followup letting me know I will claim the answer,
otherwise you may want to post a followup to let other researchers
know to keep working on your request.
I used two search engines exhaustively to look for your items:
http://www.vivisimo.com/ (clustered search)
The terms I used in my searches were as follows:
"aluminum rectangle tube" 3/16
"aluminum rectangle" 3/16
Thanks, mosquitohawk-ga

The application of this tubing requires as small a tube as possible to
slip over an existing structure that measures 1.5 x 2.5 with a
clearance of perhaps 1/16 inch per side. 2 x 3 x 3/16 wall would be
ideal. 2 x 3 x 0.200, 2 x 3 x 5mm is also OK. One searcher has found
what appears to be a custom extruder who is willing to make 2 x 3 x
0.188. In the event that there are set up charges and great expense
involved in making this custom size, then this is NOT a solution. If
they can ship off the shelf because this is a standard size for them,
then this IS a solution. I have submitted a RFQ. I'll announce here
what they say.

I called Argylein and talked with a sales rep named Mike at 1:30
today. He said that most of their work is custom. He checked
inventory and found that there was no stock measuring 2 x 3 x 0.188
on hand. He also checked for 0.200 and 5mm wall sections. The only
thing he can do for me is a custom run. He said that he would first
need to confirm that the die in question was available. Anything they
have run over their many years of being in business is on the list on
the web site. They have made this size in the past. Minimum order is
500 pounds with an estimated cost of $1,200. This will work when i am
a big company, but for now, i really need this tubing to be off the
shelf and available in small quantities like 24 feet, perhaps in
pieces that are 6 or 12 feet long.

Another size tube might also be acceptable as long as 1.5" x 2.5" bar
slips inside of it. That would be 75mm x 50mm x 4mm wall section.
Wall sections varying between 4.0 and 4.5mm would also be acceptable.
Is there a supplier of off the shelf rectangular alum. tubing who is
located in the US? or will ship modest quantities of this size tube to
the US? Please keep looking.
