Hello,

I am looking to find the approximate number of small hedge funds
operating out of the U.S. I quantify "small" as less than $20 million
under management. An estimate by a hedge fund advisory service or
investment bank is preferred. A quote such as "there are thousands of
small hedge funds" is not sufficient for my research.

Thanks in advance.

Tony

Dear overlord-ga,
Just to let you know that I have researched your question but have
been unable to identify the exact data you require. Part of the
problem is that the information is available, but on subscriber sites
such as the Tass database http://www.hedgeworld.com/

Also there is no regulatory body to monitor their activities.
"Since hedge funds do not register with SEC, their actual data cannot
be independently followed; therefore hedge fund data is self-reported.
There are between 6,000 to 7,000 hedge funds in the U.S. today."

You may find some useful data in these:

Table 2
http://www.wedgealternatives.com/pdf/Bground%20Note%20on%20HF%20Industry%20(IMF).pdf

2000 figures widely quoted, but it does not specify whether it is
worldwide or US (page 3)

Same information appears here. (page 11)

In percentage terms for 2002, but no total number given, nor whether
it applies to the US.
