Dear smack-ga; Thank you for allowing me an opportunity to answer your interesting question. By ?safe? I assume you mean to safely stay within your 2,000 calorie a day goal in accordance with your diet. The USDA recommends no more than 10 teaspoons of added sugar a day while on a 2000 calorie diet; only 25% of which should be table sugar: 1 Teaspoon = 4 Grams (4g) Keep in mind that the typical conscientious American adult on a 2000 calorie a day diet gets a mere 16% of his daily intake from added sugar. ADDED SUGAR CONSUMPTION IN A 2000 CALORIE A DAY DIET http://www.cspinet.org/reports/sugar/caloriediet.html Ideally, this can ?safely? be broken down in this fashion: http://www.cspinet.org/reports/sugar/sugarchart2.gif To determine how this is divided up among the foodstuffs you consume during the day, be sure to examine this part of the nutritional guide on the product packages: http://www.cspinet.org/reports/sugar/sugarlabel2.gif I hope you find that my research exceeds your expectations. If you have any questions about my research please post a clarification request prior to rating the answer. Otherwise I welcome your rating and your final comments and I look forward to working with you again in the near future. Thank you for bringing your question to us. Best regards; Tutuzdad-ga ? Of course, 25% is much too high. The USDA is highly influenced by the sugar industry lobby. You really should limit sugar intake as much as possible. |

Nelson, I think you misread the answer. Of the allotted 10 teaspoons (40 grams) of sugar, only 25% should be table sugar (as opposed to honey, corn syrup, etc.) This works out to 2 1/2 teaspoons, or 10 grams per day. This figure in unlikely to have the sugar industry breaking out the champagne. alex_p |

Tutuzdad, if a "typical conscientious American adult" gets 320 calories per day from added sugar, this is not a "mere 16%", but rather twice as much as recommended! Recommended is no more than 10 teaspoons = 40 grams = 160 calories = 8% of 2000 calories. (Or perhaps you were being ironic.) alex_p |
