Is there somewhere in LA or San Diego that rents vans or SUV's and
allows the renters to take the vehicles across the Mexican border?

You will see the following message:

?Driving into Mexico-Returning to the U.S.

An Avis vehicle rented from this location can be driven into Mexico as
long as the following conditions are met:

- vehicle will cross the border into Mexico from San Diego, CA,
Imperial-El Centro, CA, or Yuma, AZ, only
- vehicle will be driven no further than 450 miles into Baja, California
- vehicle will be returned to an Avis location in the United States
- renter purchases Mexico Visitors Auto Insurance (MVAI)

Mexico Visitors Auto Insurance may be purchased at several Avis
locations in Southern California and in Yuma, AZ.

The cost of the insurance is approximately $21 per day. For further
information on travel into Mexico from this location call

Due to Mexican law, a Mexican resident is restricted from driving a US
owned vehicle into Mexico.?


Avis does rent vans and SUV?s and there is no mention of a restriction
on vehicle types that can be driven into Mexico.  I recommend that you
call them for more information.

Check at the airport at time of rental for authorization and mandatory
purchase of a Mexican insurance policy. Travel into Mexico is
permitted up to 25 miles into the country of Mexico and to Ensenada or
Rocky point ? no driving is allowed to any other Mexican cities/areas
without specific authorization from the renting location.
 

Note: Mexican law does not allow Mexican citizens to bring the U.S.
vehicle into Mexico.?
