Hello lullu,

?Only 24 women with Down's syndrome have been reported to have had a
child, and no men with Down's syndrome to have done so (Jagiello,
1981).? (Scroll a little more than halfway down the page)

National Down Syndrome Society: ?Approximately 50 percent of women
with Down syndrome are fertile. Between 35 and 50 percent of children
born to mothers with Down syndrome will have Trisomy 21 or other
developmental disabilities.? Regarding men with Down Syndrome, few
studies have been done, but, The NDSS says this of men ?It does seem
clear that, in general, men with Down syndrome have a significantly
lower overall fertility rate than that of other men of comparable
ages.?

?The chance of a woman with Down's Syndrome having a baby with Down's
Syndrome is theoretically 50%. There is one documented instance of
fertility in a male with Down's Syndrome; the mother also had Down's
Syndrome. The pregnancy miscarried about half-way through.?

In this study, by Rosa Maria Cento, Letizia Ragusa, Caterina Proto,
Antonino Alberti, Gaetano Fiore, Fabio Colabucci, ovarian function was
found to be impaired in women with Down Syndrome, due to ovaries
that were insensitive to FSH (Follicle stimulating hormone). Journal

?With rare exceptions, men with Down syndrome cannot father a child.
In any pregnancy, a woman with Down syndrome has a 50-50 chance of
conceiving a child with Down syndrome, but many affected fetuses are
miscarried.?

BioMedCentral: ?Although a small percentage of women with Down's
syndrome do not menstruate, the vast majority of women with
developmental disabilities have regular menstrual cycles, comparable
to women in the general population? Allison A Brown BA and Carol J
Gill PhD
http://www.biomedcentral.com/1534-5874/id/cr-wr2334/abstract

A WHO document states ?Between 65% and 80% of women with Down syndrome
have regular menstrual cycles, while 15 to 20% have never
menstruated.?

From the University of Iowa Hospitals, an abstract by Don C. Van Dyke,
MD, Dianne M. McBrien, MD, Andrea Sherbondy, MD, ?Women have impaired
but still significant fertility: a number of reviews document women
with Down syndrome carrying pregnancy to term and delivering infants
with and without Down syndrome (Bovicelli et al, 1982; Rani et al,
1990)? Many babies born to moms with Down Syndrome are of low birth
weight, and may be born prematurely. See Table 5 for a chart
displaying results of births to Down Syndrome moms.

?Females with Down syndrome are fertile; males are sterile. Females
with Down syndrome have a 50% chance of having children with Down
syndrome. Identical twins with Down syndrome will both be affected. In
cases of fraternal twins, usually one twin is not affected?
Biomechanical management of children and adolescents with down
syndrome: proper diagnosis of biomechanical abnormalities allows for
more effective treatment of this condition. (Biomechanics &
Orthotics).

Research on fertility in women with Down Syndrome is very limited.
Increased risk of thyroid disease, coupled with decreased ovarian
performance, reduce fertility in these women. Apart from natural
factors, many families of women with Down?s provide means of birth
control (Oral contraceptives, tubal ligations) to prevent unwanted
pregnancies.
