Hi snipe,

We believe what you are looking for are the Indicative Floodplain
Maps, issued by the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs
(DEFRA). Fortunately, they are accessible online - here's how to do
it:

1. Click on this link: http://216.31.193.171/asp/1_map.asp
2. Find "Floodplains" in the drop-down menu to the left and push "Go".

3. Read the info on the page that pops up (there are links of interest throughout):
Indicative Flood Plain Maps: What do the maps show?
"The maps show natural river and coastal floodplains in England and
Wales. A floodplain is the natural 'overspill' area where a river may
rise above its banks or when high tides or stormy seas may cause
flooding of low-lying coastal areas.
It is important to remember that the risk of a flood occurring is
there at all times - this year, next year and future years. Even if
you were flooded last year, there is the same chance that you could
also be flooded this year.
The area shaded blue (which shows potential flooding from rivers)
includes all areas that are estimated to face at least a one per cent
chance of flooding each year, ignoring the presence of defences.
The area shaded green (which shows potential flooding from the sea)
includes all areas that are estimated to face at least a 0.5 per cent
chance of flooding each year, ignoring the presence of defences.
Where areas are at risk of flooding from both rivers and the sea the
colour of the flooding with the greatest extent will be shown."

4. IMPORTANT: Press "Accept" when you are ready - the maps won't work
unless you do this.
5. You will arrive back at the main page - now it is just a matter of
clicking on the map to enlarge the area you are interested in. The
views range from 1:10,000,000 to 1:50,000.
6. Once you have the map working, you can choose to view other layers
via the drop-down menu.

Indicative Floodplain
4.24 "The Environment Agency's new Indicative Floodplain Maps provide
a general overview of areas of land in natural floodplains and
therefore potentially at risk of flooding from rivers or the sea. The
maps use the best information currently available, based on historical
flood records and geographical models. They indicate where flooding
from rivers, streams, watercourses or the sea..."

We also suggest ordering the Flood risk maps issued by the Institute
of Hydrology - they are available for free here:

Flood risk map for England and Wales
D G Morris & R W Flavin
ISBN 0948540 75 3 October 1996
Original price £120.00 - now free
" This report presents maps of England and Wales showing an estimate
of the areas that would be inundated by floods of the 100-year return
period level from non-tidal rivers, in the absence of flood defences.
The maps also identify the built-up areas that would be at risk.
Tables summarise the distribution of the flooding, by depth and
locality. The methods and data used in the estimation of this flood
risk are described.
No previous nationwide estimate has been published of these quantities
at this level of detail."

"A `100-year' flood event - that's a serious flood with a chance of
happening once every 100 years - has been calculated as having a 25
per cent chance of happening at least once in 30 years, the duration
of a typical mortgage. It also has a 50 per cent chance of happening
at least once in 70 years, a typical lifetime."

technique and should not, by themselves, be used to infer that
specific areas are, or are not, at risk of inundation. Flood risk at
any specific location may be influenced by local factors - not least
flood defences - that have not been taken into account'. This method
has not been applied to rivers with catchment areas less than 10sqkm
nor has it been applied downstream of the tidal limit."

7) "I would suggest that the calculation of what values are attributed
to various flood flows on the various rivers was devised during a
prolonged period of mostly dry winters... the overall built-up area
which should be protected in a one in 100 year flood... has been
growing during the nineties, and with global warming is likely to
continue to grow.".
