T.S. Eliot once said that only poets should criticize poetry. This
received a classic put-down in an essay I thought was entitled "Is
Criticism Possible?" by, I thought, C.S. Lewis, but I have been unable
to find it in his bibliography. I would like to know the title of the
essay, the author, and where I can find it. Thanks.

C.S. Lewis did indeed write an essay with the title: "Is Critiism
Possible", and it appears as Chapter II of his book, "Preface to
Paradise Lost" (Oxford Press, 1942).

You can see a mention of this work, here:

in the "Other Ressources" section, and you can see a few actual pages
from the book at amazon.com, as long as you are registered at their
site. The direct link to the table of contents (which should work if
you are registered) is:

Let me know if you need any additional information or clarification of
the information I have presented here.

Thanks.
