Are you perhaps referring to Ethel Byrne nee Higgins, Margaret Sanger's sister?

Essie is a fairly common nickname for Ethel.

I have not seen an indication that this Ethel Byrne used the nickname
"Essie" (though it is conceivable that people familiar with her called
her that).  However, she was a forerunner of Women's Lib in NY in the
early 20th century.  Thus, she might be the person you are interested
in.

Thanks for your help so far. I dont think your Ethel Byrne is the
person I`m looking for. Essie was born in Co Wicklow, Ireland ca. 1895
and died in NY in 1970/80. She was imprisoned for her activities in
Womens lib and the NY Times ran several articles on this. Hope this
helps.
