Hello haironfire-ga:

Thank you for your patience. After doing an extensive research on your
question, I am providing you the information that, I think, will
fulfill your needs.

Let me summarize, what I found? I was able to locate one of the most
useful website on the internet that will help you in your research.
First, I will discuss how might this website help you and than I will
list 30 companies in the four states that are considered to be the
largest in their respective states. Finally, I will list the top US
companies that have invested in Ottawa, recently AND MORE.

The website that I mentioned is VC Buzz at http://www.vcbuzz.com. It
will help you locate companies that have invested in Ottawa,
Individual States and the Midwest region. Its search engine will also
let you find what companies were invested in and how much was the
amount. Although, you will have to sought through the information
yourself, but it is the best source of the kind of information that
you require. Before I explain, how to best use the search engine, here
are some of the lists for your review:

TOP US VC INVESTORS IN ONTARIO REIGON WHICH HAVE MAINLY INVESTED IN
OTTAWA (data for the last three years)
Criteria: 3 or more investments

OK! These instructions might help you understand how to use this
search engine and dig out more information.

How to find VC firms that have invested in Ottawa recently?
1. Here is the front page of the search engine
http://www.vcbuzz.com/new/vc.cgi?cobrand=icom

2. In the search box on top, there are three fields. Type Ottawa in
the first field, let the second field remain at it is (Funded
Companies) and change the third field to ?city?.

3. You will get a list of companies in Ottawa that were funded by
Venture Capital and Private Equity Firms. But, this is not what we
need. Now, click on the ?VC Firms? on top where it says ?Find the VC
firms associated with these companies?.

4. You will get the list of all VC firms that have invested in Ottawa in the past.

5. If you click on the individual name of the VC firm, it will tell
you the recent three year investment details. To check how much
different investment this company made in Ottawa, scroll down to check
DEAL GEOGRAPHIC DATA. It will provide you the information about the
investment of the VC firm by geographical area. For example the first
VC on the list 3i US invested one time in Ottawa. It mainly invests in
North East and West Regions; mostly in Massachusetts and California
and most of the investments were 2nd round investments etc?..

I know that it is a little time consuming as most of the US companies
have done one or two deals in Canada but there are companies that have
done more deals.

Similarly, if you need to find out which companies invested in the
Midwest region, State or any other cities, you can do so. You can also
find the list of venture capital firms in any state and their
investment profile.

CAUTION! As I said that it sometimes get difficult to search the data,
you may use a few of the examples that I have provided below.

EX 1: Find VC Firms located in Michigan
First Field: MI (search engine only recognizes the Abbreviations),
Second Field: VC Firm, Third Field: State

EX 2: Find the VC Firms that have invested in Ottawa.
See above

EX 3: Find VC Firms that have invested in Ohio companies.
First Field: OH, Second Field: Funded Company, Third Field: State
>>>>Than click on VC firms on top.

EX4: Find VC Firms that have invested in the Midwest region.
You have to find a VC firm that has invested in the Midwest region and
than click on ?Midwest? from the ?Deal geographical data? in the
company profile.

Here are some of the largest VC firms in the four states that you
mentioned. Please note that I have provided an estimate of the capital
under management of most firms. The information is not available for
all of the firms. Notice that you can type the name of these
individual companies in the search engine and evaluate their recent
transactions.

Thank you very much for your work. I have had time only to glance
through it but it seems like it will be very helpful and useful. I
will get into it today or tomorrow and will let you know more then.
Why did you seem to emphasize Ottawa so much? I was asking about
Ontario in general and by far the most business in Ontario is in
Toronto.

Clarification of Answer by leader-ga on 26 Feb 2004 06:34 PST
Yes you are right. Somehow, my mind got preoccupied with Ottawa. It
was after your clarification that I was myself surprised. My recent
research in Venture Capital may explain this, as there was a lot of
talk about the Venture Capital boom in Ottawa and many firms striking
a deal with foriegn companies. Please let me know if you want to find
something about Toronto.

Thanks.

I would like more information, if it is readily available, on US
venture capital investments in Ontario including Toronto. I don't
know, however, how much more time you want to spend on this for the
existing fee or if there would be an additional fee. Please let me
know before you do more work. Thanks.

Thank you for clarifying. I will check to see where may I get this
information. Since, you specifically asked for my services, I don't
want to charge any extras for additional information.

Thank you for being so considerate.

Sincerely,
leader-ga.
